Late Challenge Not Enough to Push Warriors Past Trojans

Mount Olive, NC – Southern Wesleyan fell on the road to the University of Mount Olive Trojans on Friday evening in a 3-0 final score.

The Warriors had 19 kills in the loss with Amber Bass leading the team with seven kills.  Ashlyn Holford followed with six kills.  Southern Wesleyan had 18 assists with Cara Martin posting 10 of the assists.  Jarena Byers had two of the three service aces.  Jesse Soles had 25 digs.  Both Riley Young and Tiyonnah Brown had two blocks in the loss.

How It Happened

Set One
The Warriors took the first point as Ashlyn Holford put down a kill, however a kill by Makenzie Holzer allowed the Trojans to tie it up.  Mount Olive continued to push ahead, but a kill by Emily Ellis allowed the Warriors to stay within one point.  Southern Wesleyan kept up the intensity with a kill by Amber Bass and a service ace by Jarena Byers.  The Trojans would not let up as Nafsika Papavasileiou and Alyssa Jackson put down kills to put Mount Olive on top once again.  Despite blocks by Tiyonnah Brown and Riley Young, the Trojans took the first set 25-10.

Set Two
Mount Olive took the first two points of the second set, but the Warriors countered with kills by Ashlyn Holford and Emily Ellis to tie it back up 2-2.  The Trojans continued to push with kills by Amara Eziakonwa and Nafsika Papavasileiou to give Mount Olive a 7-2 point lead.  The Warriors began to chip away at the lead as Riley Young put down a kill.  However, the Trojans kept pushing ahead, but a kill by Ellis allowed the Warriors to keep the Warriors within ten points.  Despite late kills by Amber Bass, the Trojans took the second set 25-12.

Set Three
Mount Olive took the early lead on kills by Alyssa Jackson and Makenzie Holzer before a service error by the Trojans allowed the Warriors to get on the board.  Ashlyn Holford put down a kill for Southern Wesleyan to allow the Warriors to trail the Trojans 7-2.  A kill by Amber Bass put the Warriors within four of the Trojans, but a kill by Alyssa Jackson allowed the Trojans to regain a five-point advantage.  Southern Wesleyan challenge as Bass killed the ball once again to put the Warriors within two.  With only one point separating them, Jarena Byers delivered a service ace to tie the third set up with eleven points apiece.  The Warriors continued their attack as an ace by Jesse Soles allowed the Warriors to take a 13-12 point lead.  Mount Olive countered, but a kill by Bass allowed the Warriors to regain the lead.  Despite blocks and kills by Ashlyn Holford, the Trojans kept up the intensity to push past Southern Wesleyan.  However, the Warriors would not let up as Cara Martin tipped the ball over the net for a kill and then Tiyonnah Brown and Riley Young blocked the Trojans attack to put the Warriors down 18-23.  However, back-to-back kills by Amara Eziakonwa and Alyssa Jackson allowed Mount Olive to take the final set 25-18.


 
What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will remain on the road as they travel to Pembroke, NC to take on the UNC Pembroke Braves.  They will then return to Historic Tysinger Gymnasium on October 13 as they welcome the Emmanuel College Lions to Central, SC for a 7 p.m. game.  They will remain at home on October 15 and 16 as they take on the Francis Marion Patriots (October 15 at 6 p.m.) and the Lees-McRae Bobcats (October 16 at 2 p.m.).
