Warriors Fall in Close Match Against Coker

Darius Sharpe and Justice McCullough combed to score 34 points in the loss against Coker College Friday evening.

The Warriors took an early lead in the evening match against Coker College on a layup by senior Darius Sharpe.  Coker countered with a three point shot, but Sharpe helped the Warriors regain the lead yet again.  The Warriors quickly lengthened their lead to 8-3 by a jump shot by DJ Dobson.  It was only the beginning as Southern Wesleyan University surged to a 13-5 lead on a jump shot by Sharpe.  Daryl Myers lengthened the lead to ten with a three point jump shot to give the Warriors a 27-17 lead.  JT Noellert's jump shot brought them 40-29 and then Darius Sharpe made a free throw to make it 50-39 at halftime.

Returning from halftime, the Warriors started off with a layup from Jeremy Wert to make the game 52-39.  Coker began to rally in the second half scoring two layups in less than a minute.  They continued the rally, cutting the lead down to 69-64 by a layup by Miguel Priest and then went on to tie the game 76-76 on a dunk by Larry Cooper.  The Cobras brought their lead up to 88-82, but the Warriors rallied to bring the game to 88-84 to end the game.

"We controlled the game for 36 minutes and had the lead with 4 minutes to go," said Head Men's Basketball Coach Charles Wimphrie.  He continued, "We must reach down and find a way to finish these type games.  Mental errors hurt us down the stretch."

The loss for the Warriors brings their record to 1-2 and 0-0 in Conference Carolina play.  The Coker College Cobras are now 2-2.  The Warriors will take on Newberry College on Saturday, November 19 at 7 p.m.
