CENTRAL, S.C. – Southern Wesleyan baseball couldn't hold an early lead in the opening game of a three-game set against Pfeiffer, falling to the Falcons 13-8.
The Warriors scored three runs in each of the first two innings to take an early 6-0 lead but the Falcons responded with a six spot in the third to tie the game. SWU took the lead in the fourth as Luke Hostetler doubled home Josh Shimp who singled with two outs.
In the sixth SWU added another run as Shimp knocked home Justin Brew who led off the frame with a double, one of his two hits. Shimp finished the game with four hits and four RBI. Two of his four hits were doubles and he also scored twice. The freshman knocked in one run in the first and two in the second.
After the sixth the Warriors were held without a hit as the Falcons stormed back to score two in the seventh to tie the game 8-8. Pfeiffer added a run in the eighth and four more in the ninth.
In addition to Brew and Shimp's multi hit game, Luke Hostetler collected three hits including a pair of doubles. He also knocked in two. Brew scored three runs. Michael Hyman scored twice, once after a double in the first and another in the second after a walk.
Kalin Smith took the loss for the Warriors and falls to 0-1 on the year. Smith tossed two innings and gave up three hits and just one run. He struck out three. Matt Buss made the start and pitched six innings, allowing eight runs, six earned on six hits and five walks. He struck out seven. Jordan Finster ran into trouble in the ninth, allowing four hits and four runs, three earned.
Zach Huneycutt picked up the win for Pfeiffer and is now 2-1 on the year. Huneycutt tossed three innings out of the bullpen, striking out three.
The teams are scheduled to play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
