Warriors Hold Off Barton for Road Win

WILSON, N.C. – Southern Wesleyan had to fight and crawl to hold off a late charge from Barton to pick up their second win in three tires, 64-62 over the Bulldogs in Conference Carolinas action.

The Warriors opened the second half on a 23-11 run to take a nine-point lead after trailing by three, 28-25, at the half. Cameron Solomon poured in 16 of his game-high 27 in the second half as the Warriors held on in a wild finish.

SWU led 61-53 with 2:10 to play and looked like they were headed to an easy finish. Barton scored eight straight over a 1:07 capped by a triple from Jordan Sharpe that tied the game at 61-61 with 47 seconds left.

After a timeout, Mike Lieberman's layup put the Warriors up two with 22 seconds left. Lieberman missed the ensuing free throw after being fouled by Sharpe on the play. Barton raced down to the other end and after missing a shot in close, Khari Faison grabbed the rebound and was fouled. Faison missed the first free throw and made the second to cut the SWU lead down to one.

Kenny Holmes was fouled and made one of two free throws to put the Warriors back up by two, 64-62. The Bulldogs came back down and took a fade away  three and got the rebound but were unable to score as the clock expired.

In addition to Solomon's 27, Holmes scored 13 on 3 of 9 shooting. Solomon was 7 of 20 from the floor and 12 of 13 from the free throw line. The Warriors shot 45.5 percent from the floor and made just 2 of 13 from long range.

Holmes added seven assists and nine rebounds, both of which led the team. Dwayne Bryant came off the bench for the first time in his career and scored nine points and grabbed eight rebounds. Bryant also had five assists. Josh Coleman grabbed seven rebounds.

Barton shot 35.4 percent from the floor and only 21.4 percent (3 of 14) from long range. The Bulldogs were equally poor from the free throw line, making just 41.9 percent (13 of 31). The Warriors won the battle on the boards with 43 rebounds to 39 for Barton.

The Warriors return home to host Mount Olive on Wednesday at7:30 p.m. The Trojans won the first matchup of the season 82-68.
