Box Score OWENSBORO, Ky. - The Southern Wesleyan men's basketball team was defeated 80-52 against Northern Michigan in the Warriors' second and final game of the Kentucky Wesleyan Classic. The Warriors are 1-6 on the season while Northern Michigan improves to 1-2.
Jemiah Wimphrie led the Warriors with 12 points and seven rebounds. Freshmen Justice McCullough and DJ Dobson followed with eight points while Chandler Harrison and Jeremy Wert, also freshmen, added five.
"Even though we lost both games in the classic, I'm proud that my team battled hard with some veteran teams," said head coach Charles Wimphrie. "We are getting our freshmen some valuable experience. We will have to remain positive throughout the season. We know there will be both up's and down's this season, especially since we rely so heavily on freshmen, but hopefully there will be more up's than down's."
Though the Warriors shot a respectable 44.7% from the field in the contest, Wimphrie's team struggled from beyond the arc. Southern Wesleyan was 0-6 in the first half and shot 28.6% from the second half to shoot 16.7% on the night, much lower than the normal production from behind the three point line. Northern Michigan shot a similar 48.3% from the field but shot an impressive 50% from beyond the arc, while taking 10 more chances than SWU (11-22).
A lot of Northern Michigan's points came off turnovers as 17 SWU turnovers led to 30 NMU points. Though NMU had 15 more rebounds, both teams recorded 30 points in the paint. SWU also had 26 points off the bench as opposed to Northern Michigan's 14.
The Warriors will return to action Tuesday, Dec. 1 at 7:30 p.m. at conference foe Mount Olive.
