Box Score OWENSBORO, Ky. - Despite 10 players scoring and five players scoring more than seven points, the Southern Wesleyan men's basketball team came up short against Michigan Tech in the opening game of the Kentucky Wesleyan Classic on Friday afternoon, falling 85-71. The Warriors are 1-5 on the season while Michigan Tech improves to 1-1.
Zach Watson led the Warriors with 14 points as the freshman was 4-8 from three-point range and 2-2 from the free throw line. Kenny Holmes added 12 points and Jamaral Kearse netted 10 points in the game. Darius Sharpe had nine points and a team high three assists while freshmen Jeremy Wert and Da'Quan Weldon both tallied seven points.
The majority of the Huskies production came from Bryan Heath, Kyle Monroe and Kyle Stankowski. Heath led all players with 22 points, Monroe scored 18 points and had eight rebounds and Stankowski was right behind with 18 points and six rebounds on the afternoon.
Field goal percentages were nearly identical in the first half, but the Huskies took over in the second half, outshooting the Warriors 57.7% to 30.8%. The Warriors only trailed by three at the half but Michigan Tech would outscore SWU by 11 in the second half to extend the lead they woud not relinquish. While the Warriors had the advantage in bench points (33-25) and points off turnovers (20-10), Michigan Tech had a 28-14 advantage in points in the paint.
Southern Wesleyan will resume play Saturday, Nov. 28 at 3 p.m. ET in the team's second and final game of the tournament as the Warriors take on Northern Michigan.
