Warriors Pick Up First Win of Season with 85-76 Victory over Brevard

Box Score

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The Southern Wesleyan men's basketball team picked up its first win of the young season on Friday as the Warriors defeated Brevard 85-76 in the team's second and final game of the Carson-Newman Classic. With the win, the Warriors improve to 1-1 on the season while Brevard falls to 0-2 with the loss.

"We are really coming together as a team and I'm really proud of the win today," said head coach Charles Wimphrie. "However, we need to improve on the defensive end. We are giving up too many second half points. But, we kept our composure down the stretch and knocked down some critical free throws to seal the victory."

Southern Wesleyan had four players in double figures. Freshman Zach Watson led the Warriors in scoring for the second game in a row. After scoring 17 points in the team's 83-69 loss to Carson-Newman in Friday's season opener, the 6'4 guard followed up that performance with 23 points in the win on Saturday. De'Quan Weldon added 18 points, six rebounds, and three assists in 20 minutes of action. Freshman Chandler Harrison recorded a career high as the native of North Augusta, S.C. tallied 13 points, five rebounds and three assists. The 6'4 guard was also 9-9 from the free throw line. Jamaral Kearse was the fourth Warrior in double digits with 10 points. The senior was 2-3 from beyond the arc.

Justice McCullough added 11 rebounds and six points. 14 Warriors saw playing time with nine contributing points. The Warriors were an astonishing 90.9% (30-33)  from the charity stripe. The Warriors led 30-21 at the half, though both teams recorded 55 points in the second half. There were 11 lead changes and the score was tied 10 times.

After opening the season with two road games, the Warriors return home to Tysinger Gymnasium for three straight home games, starting Wednesday. On Wednesday Wimphrie's team hosts Francis Marion at 7 p.m. The Warriors then play host to North Georgia on Friday, Nov. 20 (7 p.m.) and Erskine Tuesday, Nov. 24 at 7:30 p.m.
