Box Score CENTRAL, S.C. - The Southern Wesleyan men's soccer team won its fifth straight with a 2-1 win over Belmont Abbey on Saturday afternoon at Childs Field. The Warriors improve to 8-3-1 overall and 3-2-1 in Conference Carolinas while the Crusaders fall to 1-9-2 overall and 0-5-2 in conference play.
"This win really means a lot to our team right now," said head coach Camilo Rodriguez. "I am so thankful we got a good result and that we were able to stay injury free in the game. Once again, we were very solid in the backfield and on offense we really took advantages of our chances. I have a ton of respect for our guys who, again, left it all on the field."
Christian Taylor scored his third goal of the year in the 25th minute of the game off a great pass from Michel Herszenhout. Early in the second half Herszenhout, a junior midfielder, scored a goal of his own with a header off of an Ivan Malagon corner kick. The goal was the sixth of the season for Herszenhout, a team high. In the 76th minute the Crusaders would tack on a goal. A Southern Wesleyan player headed the ball back towards the goal, but goalkeeper Ruben Rodriguez had come out of the box to grab the ball and the ball dribbled towards the goal before Belmont Abbey's Zach Melvin tipped the ball into the net.
Rodriguez played a wonderful game in goal, stopping many solid chances from the Crusader offense. The senior finished with 13 saves in the contest.
Despite the loss, Belmont Abbey had a 22-12 shot advantage and a 9-3 nod in corner kicks.
The Warriors return to action Wednesday, Oct. 21 at Limestone. The Saints are 9-3 overall and 7-3 in conference play entering the matchup. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
