SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Another meet and more personal bests and top finishes highlight the Southern Wesleyan track and field team at the Wofford Terrier Relays on Saturday.
The Warriors had 14 more top-10 finishes between the men and women including wins from Keith Johnson in the college division of the 400 meter dash and also for Jess Maggio in the 100 hurdles college division. Johnson ran a personal best of 48.54 and just missing on the NAIA "B" standard of 48.50. He finished second overall. Likewise Jess Maggio ran a season-best in the 100 hurdles with a time of 14.91 and was second overall. Her time was good enough to meet the NAIA "B" standard and is off of the "A" standard by just .01.
Kiaser Pickney also had a second place finish in the discus with a throw of 42.21 meters which is a season-best. That throw is also good enough to qualify for the NCCAA meet. Jhante McMillan also qualified for the NCCAA meet in the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.30 and a sixth place finish. McMillan also placed fifth in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 55.36.
The women saw three qualify for the NCCAA meet as Lavornne Taylor made the cut in the 100 meter dash with a time of 13.04 and placed 15th. Maggio finished 11th in that race with a 12.91. Maggio also qualified in the long jump with a jump of 5.03 meters. They will be joined by Zarian Irby who qualified in the high jump with a mark of 1.49 meters.
Amber King highlighted the field events once again as she placed second in the long jump with a season-best jump of 5.44 meters. King also took fourth in the triple jump with a mark of 10.57 meters. Three more season-best performances for SWU included Olivia Bush in the 400 hurdles (4th, 1:06.72), Becca Watson in the 1500 meters (18th, 5:16.77) and Kayla Eison (7th, 2.75 meters).
The women also saw three more top-10 finishes. Lavornne Taylor placed ninth in the 200 meter dash with a time of 26.42. Logan Thiel ran a 1:00.84 in the 400 meter dash to place ninth and Leeann Gibson was eighth in the shot put with a throw of 11.03 meters.
The Warriors are scheduled to be back in action next weekend at Furman.
