CENTRAL, S.C. – Despite the rain the Warriors and Eagles were able to get in one game on Saturday before the heavy stuff arrived as No. 3 Faulkner came away with a 5-3 win.
Both teams scored three times in the first before Faulkner took the lead in the third on an RBI groundout. They added a run on a sacrifice fly in the sixth.
The Warriors had four hits in the first inning against Jeremy Holcombe but were held to just two hits the rest of the way. In the first inning it was back-to-back doubles from Stephen Wyatt and Julio Lara that scored the first two runs as Joe Boudolf was hit by a pitch earlier in the inning. After a bunt single from J.J. Julian, Johnny Ponder knocked in the tying run with a single up the middle.
The Warriors had another good chance to score in the sixth. Lara led off with a single to left and Julian followed with a walk to put two on with no outs. Ponder sacrificed both runners into scoring position but Holcombe got Andrew Howard and Tyler Bice to ground out to end the threat.
SWU left nine men on base as Faulkner only left seven on base. Faulkner picked up nine hits on the day and walked four times against Tim O'Callaghan. Holcombe struck out seven and walked just two for Faulkner but he hit three batters. Holcombe improved to 8-2 with the win and O'Callaghan fell to 0-9 on the year. Patrick McGrady picked up his second save with a scoreless ninth.
After the game the rain picked up and the teams were unable to start game two. With Friday night's game also rained out the teams have yet to set a date to makeup the games, most likely a doubleheader if a date can be found.
