COLUMBIA, S.C. – Southern Wesleyan track and field wrapped up their regular season on Saturday in soggy fashion at the USC Outdoor Open.
The Warriors will now turn their attention to the championship segment for their season, first with the Southern States Athletic Conference meet in Gulf Shores, Ala. beginning on April 25.
On Saturday the Warriors turned in only three season-best performances, all in the field. Kayla Eison reached 2.80 meters in the pole vault and finished fourth. In the long jump Jess Maggio jumped a season-best 5.30 meters to place third. Amber King also jumped 5.30 meters and placed fourth. On the men's side Kiaser Pickney threw a season-best 44.14 meters in the discus.
On the track no one was able to turn in a season-best or new qualifying time for a national meet but did have some solid finishes. The women's 4x400 meter relay finished third with a time of 4:18.96. The 4x100 team placed sixth with a time of 50.22.
In the 1500 meter race the Warriors had two men finish in the top six. Josh Thatcher placed fourth with a time of 4:15.19 while Stephen Spearman took sixth with a time of 4:28.08. Drew Welch took seventh in the 800 while Jhante McMillan placed ninth in the 100 and Keith Johnson took ninth in the 200.
Olivia Bush had the best finish on the women's side, taking seventh in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:09.18. Lavornne Taylor placed eighth in the 400 and ninth in the 200. Maggio placed ninth in the 100 and 10th in the 100 hurdles while Bush placed 12th.
Amber Taylor followed up her fourth place finish in the long jump with a fifth place finish in the triple jump. Leeann Gibson had a strong day in the throws with a third place finish in the shot put (11.14 meters) and fifth in the discus (32.38 meters). Kiaser Pickney took eighth in the shot put with a throw of 11.76 meters.
