Box Score MONTGOMERY, Ala. – A 10-point halftime lead turned into a double-digit loss for Southern Wesleyan on Thursday evening at Faulkner. The 63-51 loss snaps a five-game winning streak for the Warriors.
Cameron Solomon and Terrance Hutchins were both in double figures in the first half with 11 and 10 points respectively but the duo was held in check in the second half. Solomon and Hutchins combined for just six second-half points. The Warriors (15-13, 9-8 SSAC struggled mightily in the second half, scoring just 16 points on .294 shooting. SWU shot just .321 in the game.
Faulkner (17-12, 10-7 SSAC) overcame the 10-point halftime deficit slowly, not taking the lead until just 6:28 remained at 49-47. The Warriors managed just four points in the final six plus minutes, unable to make a comeback as Faulkner pulled away.
Hutchins finished with 14 points to lead the Warriors, shooting just 4 of 12 from the floor but managed to make 6 of 8 from the free throw line. Solomon made just 1 of 5 in the second half after 3 of 8 shooting in the first half. The Warriors made just 1 of 10 from beyond the arc in the second half and 5 of 18 from beyond the arc overall.
SWU pulled down 12 of their 16 offensive rebounds in the first half which helped lead to extra possessions. In the second half it was Faulkner getting the extra possessions with eight offensive boards. The Eagles also only turned the ball over three times in the second period while the Warriors gave it away nine times. Overall SWU had 14 turnovers and Faulkner committed 11.
The Warriors drop to third in the SSAC East while Faulkner takes over sole possession of second place with the win. While SWU can still tie Faulkner with a win on Saturday over Southern Poly and a Faulkner loss to Auburn-Montgomery, the Eagles will hold the tiebreaker having won both meetings this year. As the three seed the Warriors will play the two seed from the West, which will be either Martin Methodist or Belhaven.
SWU will wrap up the regular season on Saturday at 4 p.m. as they host Southern Poly on Senior Day.
