CENTRAL, S.C. – Three players recorded 20 or more points as the Warriors withstood several rallies to pull out a 98-83 win over Coastal Georgia in SSAC action on Thursday night.
Cameron Solomon scored 19 of his 25 in the first half as the Warriors built a 15-point lead and led by 11 at the break. Solomon made 8 of 12 from the floor and half of his six three-point attempts. The Warriors (13-12, 7-7 SSAC) were unable to put the Mariners (11-16, 6-10 SSAC) away in the second half.
Coastal Georgia overcame that 11 point halftime deficit by outscoring the Warriors 17-5 in the first four minutes of the half. The game stayed tight for the next eight minutes until the Warriors started a 12-3 run to go up 84-73 with 4:43 to play. SWU pushed the lead out to 17.
Kenny Holmes led the second-half charge with 18 of his team-high 27 points after intermission. The sophomore knocked down all three of his three pointers after halftime and converted on all six free throw attempts in the game. Terrance Hutchins also reached the 20-point mark with 20 points, 13 in the second half. Dwayne Bryant added his 12th double-double of the season with 12 points and 14 rebounds.
The Warriors shot .481 from the floor including an even .500 in the second period. SWU pulled in 21 offensive rebounds which turned into 23 second-chance points. Coastal Georgia shot .431 overall but just .190 (4 of 21) from beyond the arc. They were outrebounded by the Warriors 48-36. Kentorey Johnson led all scorers with 30 points and P.J. Reason added 20 for Coastal Georgia.
SWU will complete their long week with their fourth game since Monday as they play Monday's opponent Auburn-Montgomery in Alabama. The Warriors won that game on Monday 82-65 to snap a five-game losing streak and started a three-game winning streak. Tip is set for 5 p.m. in Montgomery.
The Warriors win on Thursday puts them at 7-7 in the SSAC East and which is currently third, one and a half games up on Southern Poly. SWU is a full two games up on Coastal Georgia and AUM for the fifth and final spot in the SSAC Tournament.
