Box Score CENTRAL, S.C. – Terrance Hutchins forced overtime but the Warriors fell at the buzzer as Dalton State overcame a seven-point halftime deficit to defeat Southern Wesleyan 97-95 on Tuesday night.
Hutchins hit the game-tying three-pointer in the corner with nine seconds left in regulation to complete the comeback, getting loose after a scramble for a loose ball. Hutchins finished with a career-high 28 points, his third straight game in double figures off the bench. The Warriors (1-2) trailed for 7:30 before the three to tie the game.
A last second driving runner from Nathan Terry was blocked by Mike Lieberman as time ran out in the second half. That was not the case in the final seconds of overtime.
Both teams traded baskets to open the extra frame and with the game tied at 93-93 with 20 seconds left Dwayne Bryant missed two free throws. Dalton State came back and made two of their own as Sean Tate capped off a perfect 7-of-7 from the line to finish with 14 points.
Ricky Sears was whistled for a foul on Kenny Holmes as he was attempting a three, the second time Holmes went to the line for three free throws on the night. Holmes made two of three to time the game for the 11th time. But Sears made up for his foul, getting the ball and driving into the lane in the final five seconds and bank in the game-winner as time ran out, giving the Roadrunners the win. Sears finished with 16 points.
The Warriors had five players in double figures including Hutchins' game-high 28. Hutchins finished the game 10-of-13 from the floor and 6-of-10 from the foul line. He made two three-pointers and added five rebounds and five assists. Cameron Solomon and Holmes each had 17 points. Dwayne Bryant recorded a double-double for the third time in three games with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Mike Lieberman added 10 points and eight boards to go along with four blocks.
Dalton State (3-0) was led by Demetrice Jacobs' 22 points and 12 rebounds. He also had a game-high five steals. The Roadrunners shot 40-percent from the floor but made 13-of-32 from downtown including a 4-of-7 clip from Jacobs. The Warriors shot 55-percent overall and made 5-of-16 from long range.
Both teams had their struggles at the free throw line as the Warriors connected on only 18-of-29 (62%) and the Roadrunners made just 16-of-25 (64%). SWU turned it over 22 times while DSU gave it up 17 times.
The Warriors will head to Savannah, Ga. to take on Armstrong Atlantic State in an exhibition contest on Friday night.
