Joey Maxon was hired in December 2014 as head men's and women's golf coach.
The Men’s and Women’s Golf teams at Southern Wesleyan have been programs on the rise since Coach Joey Maxon took over in 2014.
The Men’s Golf Program has won two events (NCCAA Regional 2016, North Greenville Invitational 2018) during Maxon’s tenure and has also posted back to back top 6 finishes at NCCAA Finals including a third place finish in 2016. In 2018 the Warriors posted a fifth place finish in only the program’s second year of eligibility in the Conference Carolinas Tournament after leading through one round. Freshman Eric Shea stunned the field for his first individual victory and first individual Conference Championship for the Warriors. Maxon has coached six All-Conference and two All-Tournament athletes.
The Women’s Golf Program has also soared to new heights recording multiple top 5 finishes and recorded their highest Conference Carolinas finish in 4th place in 2021. Senior Claire Page had an outstanding season both on and off the course posting a win at the North Greenville Invitational in the Spring of 2018 while also becoming the program’s first ever NCAA All-American Scholar. Page also earned NCCAA All-American honors after recording a 6th place finish at the NCCAA Championships in Palm Coast, Florida. Maxon has coached four All-Conference and three All-Tournament athletes.
Maxon joined the Southern Wesleyan coaching ranks after 3 years as an assistant under Ryan Cabbage at UNC Charlotte. While with the 49ers, Maxon helped to guide the Men’s team to their ninth straight NCAA Regional birth in 2013. Prior to his stint in Charlotte, Maxon was the Assistant Coach at East Tennessee State during the 2010-11 season.
Maxon is no stranger to the upstate having played collegiately at Clemson University where he was a two-time NCAA All-America selection on the course. He helped the Tigers to two ACC Team Championships and top three finishes at NCAA Finals in both his Junior and Senior campaigns. Maxon recorded 14 top 10 finishes as a Tiger, including an individual championship at the Wofford Invitational in 1996.
After graduating from Clemson in 1998 with a degree in Business Management, Maxon played professionally from 1998-2008. He competed in two U.S. Opens (Southern Hills 2001, Shinnecock 2004) and was fully exempt on the Web.com tour. During his professional career he won 11 mini-tour events including multiple wins on the NGA Tour and established 8 course records.
Maxon is married to Elizabeth Harris Maxon and has two children, Lucy (11) and Oliver (10).
