Warriors Shut Out Panthers

Orangeburg, SC – Southern Wesleyan took down the Claflin Panthers in a 8-0 final score on Thursday afternoon.

The Warriors picked up 11 hits in the victory over the Panthers.  Madison Truett and Rebecca Lamb each had two hits.  Truett, Olivia Haag and Josie Shoemaker each tripled, and Lamb picked up a double.  Truett, Amberly Way and Haag picked up two RBIs apiece.  The Warriors walked three times and had six stolen bases.

Emily Collins started in the circle and pitched five innings while striking out seven batters.  Bailey Throckmorton finished out the game in the circle and struck out one batter.

How It Happened

Southern Wesleyan brought in the first run of the game in the top of the third inning.  Riley Brown led off by reaching first on an error by the third baseman and then stole second to get into scoring position.  Maddie Crouch grounded out on the next play, but Brown was able to advance to third.  With Brown in scoring position, Amberly Way singled up the middle to bring Brown in to score.

The Warriors extended their lead in the top o the fourth inning.  With one out, Abby Schreiner hit a single through the left side.  Camille Lui came in to pinch running for Schreiner.  Olivia Haag hit a triple to center field to bring Lui in.  A misplay in the outfield allowed Haag to come in to score on the play as well to give the Warriors a 3-0 run lead.

In the top of the fifth inning, the Warriors went on the offensive again.  Maddie Crouch led off the inning by hitting a single through the right side and then stealing second base.  A single by Madison Truett allowed Crouch to come in to score.  Truett advanced to second on a wild pitch.  With one out, Chloe Smith grounded out to first base to allow Truett to advance to third base.  Rebecca Lamb came up to the plate and hit a single to the short stop to bring Truett in to score. 

Southern Wesleyan would not back down as they brought three more runs in to score in the top of the sixth inning.  Talissa Cannady reached first after an error by the third baseman.  Cannady then stole second base.  A triple by Josie Shoemaker allowed Cannady to come in to score.  With one out, Madison Truett hit a triple to left field to bring Shoemaker in to score.  Amberly Way flew out to center field to bring Truett in to score to give the Warriors an 8-0 run victory over the Panthers.

 

 

What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will return to Varsity Field on February 21 as they host the Tusculum Pioneers in a doubleheader beginning at 3pm.  They will travel to Mars Hill, NC on February 26 to take on the Lions of Mars Hill University.  The Warriors will remain on the road on March 1 as they take on the Carson-Newman Eagles.
