Southern Wesleyan Drops Road Contest to Young Harris

Young Harris, GA – Southern Wesleyan fell in the road contest to the Young Harris Mountain Lions on Tuesday evening in a 99-69 final score.

The Warriors shot 32.8% from the field and were 30.8% from beyond the arc.  Taylin Smith led the Warriors with 14 points.  Behind her, Dynasty Shegog put up 11 points and Asia Pearley had 10.  Smith and DeYana Hayes each had three assists.

Southern Wesleyan pulled down 30 rebounds with DeYana Hayes leading the team with six boards.  Dynasty Shegog and Asia Pearley each blocked attacks by the Mountain Lions.  The Warriors stole the ball away nine times.  Peyton Looky had three steals.

How It Happened

Annalise Malone sunk a three pointer to give the Mountain Lions the early advantage in the first quarter.  Southern Wesleyan countered as Rahkhia Mack collected a pass from Taylin Smith and hit a three pointer of her own.  Back-to-back three pointers by Ivona Miljanic allowed Young Harris to take a six point lead.  Asia Pearley knocked down a three pointer.  Southern Wesleyan would not relent as Kaliah Kendrick sent the ball out beyond the arc to Makayla Raines.  Raines hit a three pointer to keep the Warriors within five.  Young Harris countered as Chassidy Fedd laid the ball up from in the paint.  The Warriors countered with a last second three and jump shot by Pearley.

Young Harris charged out of the gate in the second quarter as Annalise Malone hit another three pointer.  Chassidy Fedd put up a couple more shots to extend the Mountain Lions' lead to 31-18.  Kaliah Kendrick passed the ball under the net to Alexis Glover who laid the ball up into the basket for the Warriors.  Southern Wesleyan challenged with layups by Dynasty Shegog and Rahkhia Mack.  However, the Mountain Lions continued to sink the ball into the basket from beyond the arc.  The Warriors pushed on as Glover and Shegog each put up shots.  However, the Mountain Lions led 57-35 at halftime.

A foul by Taylin Smith allowed Kamryn Bates to go to the free throw line.  Bates hit both her free throws to start the third quarter scoring for the Mountain Lions.  Dynasty Shegog took the ball all the way to the net and laid it up for the Warriors.  Lilly Griffith knocked down a three.  Shegog took the ball down for a lay up and was fouled in the process to earn the and-one basket.  Southern Wesleyan cut the lead down to nineteen as Peyton Looky fired off a three pointer with just under six minutes left in the quarter.  Kaliah Kendrick knocked down a three pointer of her own, but Parahuia Delamere laid the ball up into the basket to keep the Mountain Lions on top by twenty.  Alexis Glover passed the ball out beyond the net to Lexie Ransom.  Ransom hit her first three pointer of the game with just over three minutes left in the quarter.

The Mountain Lions hit the first points of the final quarter off free throws by Chassidy Fedd and a three pointer by Kamryn Bates.  Peyton Looky stole the ball away from the Mountain Lions and laid the ball up into the basket.  Looky stole the ball away again and passed it down the court to Lexie Ransom who laid it up to put the Warriors behind the Mountain Lions 80-57.  The Warriors continued to challenge with a layup by Asia Pearley.  The Mountain Lions would relent as Courtney Davis knocked down back-to-back three pointers.  Faith Yelton passed the ball into the court to Taylin Smith who wove past the defense before putting up a three pointer.  However, the Warriors fell to the Mountain Lions in a 99-69 final score.

 

 

What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will return to Central, SC as they host the UNC Pembroke Braves on February 15.  They will then host the Erskine Flying Fleet on February 19 at 5pm.  The Warriors will travel to Murfreesboro, NC on February 22 before returning home to host the Shorter Hawks in the final game of the regular season.
