Southern Wesleyan Falls to Newberry on the Road

Newberry, SC – Southern Wesleyan dropped the non-conference match-up against the Newberry Wolves on Wednesday evening in a 9-2 final score.

The Warriors totaled seven hits in the loss.  Marcerio Allen led the team with two hits.  Jacob Hamby doubled during the game.  The two RBIs of the game came off the bats of Chance Fogel and Jackson Mix.  Southern Wesleyan walked four times and Josh Long was hit by a pitch.

Jacob Web started the game on the mound for Southern Wesleyan.  Webb pitched two innings before Josiah Sizemore relieved him.  Southern Wesleyan totaled five strikeouts during the game.  Andrew Patterson led the team with two.

How It Happened

The Wolves attacked quickly as they brought two runs in to score in the bottom of the second inning.  They extended their lead with runs in the bottom of the third and fifth innings.

Southern Wesleyan countered in the top of the sixth inning.  Josh Long led off the inning with a single to right field.  He then advanced to second base on a single to right field by Marcerio Allen.  With two on, Clifton Olmstead hit into a fielder's choice that advanced Allen to third and took Long off the bases.  Jackson Mix singled to right field to bring Allen in and put the Warriors down 4-1.

Newberry pushed on as they brought two more runs in to score in the bottom of the sixth inning.  A home run and sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth inning plated three more runs for the Wolves.

The Warriors put up another run in the top of the ninth.  With one out, Dawson Gilstrap walked.  Jacob Hamby came in to pinch hit and hit a double down the right field line to allow Gilstrap to advance to third.  With two runners in scoring position, Chance Fogel hit a sacrifice fly to right field to bring Gilstrap home.  However, the Warriors fell to the Wolves in a 9-2 final score.
 


 
What's Next

The Warriors will travel to Hickory, NC on February 17 and 18 to take on the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears.  They will then return home on February 22 to host the Limestone Saints at 3 p.m.  Southern Wesleyan will open up Conference Carolinas action at home as they host the Chowan Hawks on February 24-25.  They will travel to Hartsville, SC on February 28 to take on the Coker Cobras.
