Warriors Drop Close Game to Valkyries on the Road

Spartanburg, SC – Southern Wesleyan fell on the road to the Converse Valkyries on Saturday in a 76-71 final score.

The Warriors shot 40% from the field in the loss.  Jamal Edmonson led the team with 18 points.  He was followed by Bryson Felder with 17 and Griffin Effenberger with 13.  Southern Wesleyan picked up 10 assists with Effenberger leading them with three.  Both Tyrin Hollis and Bryson Felder followed with two assists.

Southern Wesleyan pulled down 30 rebounds.  Dyren Brown led the team with eight while Jamal Edmonson and Tyrin Hollis were right behind him with six.  Brown went on to pick up the lone block of the game.  Griffin Effenberger led the team with three of the five steals.

Jamal Edmonson put up the first points of the game as his jump shot gave the Warriors the early lead.  However, it was short lived as Bosko Bojovic laid the ball up into the basket for the Valkyries.  The Valkyries maintained the intensity as Uzziah Dawkins fired off a three point shot from beyond the arc.  Southern Wesleyan took the lead on a layup by Edmonson.  Converse maintained the pressure as Nygel Boozer sunk his first three point shot of the evening.  They took a six point lead on another three by Dawkins.  The Warriors fought back as Bryson Felder fired off a three pointer to put the Warriors back within five.  Baskets by Aaron Porcil extended the Valkyries lead to nine points.  Felder stepped beyond the arc and collected a pass from Dyren Brown before sinking another three point shot.  With just over six minutes on the clock, Griffin Effenberger hit his first three point shot of the evening to put the Warriors down 27-22.  The Warriors continued to cut into the Valkyries lead with baskets by Tyrin Hollis and Effenberger.  However, a three pointer by Trey Smith allowed Converse to regain their ten point lead.  The Valkyries led 39-31 at halftime.

Southern Wesleyan kicked off the second half with back-to-back layups by Dyren Brown and Tyrin Hollis. The Warriors continued to chip away at the Valkyries lead as a three pointer by Bryson Felder allowed them to come to within three points of Converse.  Bosko Bojovic laid the ball up into the basket.  Dyren Brown took the ball down into the paint before laying it up to put the Warriors down 45-40 with just over sixteen minutes left to play.  Griffin Effenberger stole the ball away and passed it down the court to Jamal Edmonson.  Edmonson laid it up on the fast break to keep the Warriors within four points.  Converse pushed on as a three pointer by Uzziah Dawkins put them back on top by seven.  Bryson Felder stole the ball and put up a jump shot for the Warriors.  Elijah Pitts fired off his first three point shot of the evening.  Effenberger stole the ball and put up a jump shot to cut Converse's lead down to two points with just under seven minutes left in the half.  The Warriors continued to pressure as a jump shot by Jamal Edmonson tied the game up at sixty-one points apiece.  However, baskets by Bosko Bojovic put the Valkyries back on top.  Converse pushed on as baskets by Nygel Boozer and Bojovic extended their lead to nine points.  Despite a last second layup by Raevon Allen, the Valkyries won the game in a 76-71 final score.




 
What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will return home on February 15 as they welcome the Lees-McRae Bobcats to Historic Tysinger Gymnasium for a 7 pm tip-off.  The Warriors will remain at home on February 18 as they host the Barton Bulldogs.  They will wrap up the season on the road as they take on the King Tornado in Bristol, TN.
