Warriors Challenge Mountain Lions in Road Loss

Young Harris, GA – Southern Wesleyan fell to the Young Harris Mountain Lions on Saturday afternoon in a 77-64 final score.

The Warriors shot 39.7% from the field and were 63.6% from the free throw line in the conference match up.  Griffin Effenberger led the team with 15 points with Jamal Edmonson right on his heels with 14.  Of the 20 assists, Effenberger picked up five and Che Smith recording four. 

Southern Wesleyan totaled 27 rebounds in the contest.  Jamal Edmonson totaled seven boards to lead the Warriors while Dyren Brown followed with six.  Of the seven steals in the game Eric Hackett had two.

How It Happened

Young Harris jumped out early as Carl Cleveland laid the ball up into the basket.  Southern Wesleyan tied it up on a jump shot by Aaron Tims.  They pushed on as Dyren Brown passed the ball beyond the arc to Raevon Allen who sunk a three pointer to take a 5-2 point lead.  A three out of the hands of Dyren Brown allowed the Warriors to extend their lead to six.  The Mountain Lions fought back as back-to-back baskets by Cole Deptula and Eden Davis allowed Young Harris to take the lead.  Reco Hallmon put up a jump shot.  Marcus Long sent the ball over to Aaron Tims who put up a jumper to tie the game once again.  Eric Hackett hit a jump shot to put the Warriors on top by two.  The Mountain Lions would not relent their attacks with another basket by Davis.  Tims passed the ball beyond the arc to Griffin Effenberger who fired off a basket to put the Warriors within one point of the Mountain Lions.  Southern Wesleyan tied the game up on baskets by Che Smith and Tims.  Young Harris pushed on as they took a five point lead on baskets by Carl Cleveland.  The Mountain Lions led the Warriors 33-26 as they went into the locker room.

Young Harris maintained the momentum in the second half as Cameron Bleshoy laid the ball up into the basket.  A three pointer by Morgan Rashed extended the Mountain Lions lead to twelve.  Raevon Allen passed the ball over to Griffin Effenberger who sunk a three to put the Warriors back within nine.  Allen put up a jump shot with just over seventeen minutes left on the clock.  Young Harris continued to push on, but Southern Wesleyan countered with back-to-back layups by Jamal Edmonson and Dyren Brown.  Eric Hackett stole the ball away and then passed the ball down to Edmonson for a reverse layup to cut the Mountain Lions lead down to 46-38.  A jump shot by Aaron Tims allowed the Warriors to cut into the Mountain Lions lead further, however Matija Millivojevic sunk a three pointer for Young Harris to allow them to regain a nine point lead.  Che Smith collected a defensive rebound and sent it down the court to Griffin Effenberger who sunk a three to put the Warriors down by twelve.  Effenberger sunk yet another three with just over four minutes remaining in the half.  However, the Mountain Lions persevered to win the game in a 77-64 final score.

 

 

 

What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will travel to Charlotte, NC on December 11 to take on the Emory & Henry Wasps in the Spectrum Center at 1:15 pm.  They will then return to Historic Tysinger Gymnasium on December 16 as they host the Chowan Hawks at 4 pm.  The Warriors will host the Limestone Saints on December 19 at 1 pm before they head into the Christmas break.
