Five Post Double Digits as Warriors Challenge Hawks in Loss

Central, SC – Southern Wesleyan fell to the Chowan Hawks in a hard fought battle on Saturday afternoon in a 84-75 final score.

The Warriors shot 42.9% from the field and were 66.7% from the free throw line in the loss to the Hawks.  Five Warriors posted double digits in scoring with Shelby Glance leading the team with 18 points.  She was followed by Tristen Berry, Dynasty Shegog and Asia Pearly with 12 points, and Jordan Race with 11 points.  Southern Wesleyan picked up 20 assists with Berry leading the team with eight.

Southern Wesleyan had 42 rebounds during the game.  Lexi Greffen picked up 11 boards with Asia Pearly following with seven.  Both Shelby Glance and Jordan Race had solo blocks.  The Warriors stole the ball eight times with Tristen Berry leading the team with four.

How It Happened

Chowan attacked quickly off a jump shot by Imani Hickman.  The Hawks shut down the Warriors for the first four and a half minutes of play until Tristen Berry laid the ball up into the basket.  Shelby Glance collected a pass from Jordan Race and stepped beyond the arc to sink a three pointer.  A jump shot by Syndey Roberts put the Hawks on top by fourteen.  The Warriors pushed on with layups by Shelby Glance and Asia Pearly. 

A foul allowed Yasmine Brown to come to free throw line and make the first two baskets of the second quarter.  Southern Wesleyan quickly countered on a layup by Dynasty Shegog.  Shegog collected a pass from Tristen Berry and sunk a three pointer to put the Warriors within nine points.  The Warriors continued to chip away at the Hawks lead as Shelby Glance and Jordan Race put up back-to-back baskets.  A layup by Rahkhia Mack put the Warriors within three points with just under three minutes left in the half.  After made free throws by Glance, the Warriors trailed the Hawks 38-37 at halftime.

The Hawks kicked off the third quarter on free throws by Tynasia Bunting and a layup by Yasmine Brown.  Tristen Berry sent the ball under the basket to Dynasty Shegog who laid it up.  Shelby Glance stepped beyond the arc and sunk a three pointer to keep the Warriors within one of the Hawks.  Southern Wesleyan pushed on as a jump shot by Lexi Greffen allowed the Warriors to take a 51-50 point lead.  The lead was short lived as a layup by Imani Hickman allowed the Hawks to regain the lead.

Lexi Greffen led off the final quarter with a layup to put the Warriors down 61-58 to the Hawks.  Danea Mackey stole the ball away from the Warriors and passed it down the court to Kaleah Boykin for a layup to extend the Hawks lead to four points.  Chowan pushed on with baskets by Kyla Thomas and Yasmine Brown.  Jordan Race passed the ball down to Asia Pearly who laid it up.  A three pointer by Shelby Glance allowed the Warriors to stay within five.  However, the Warriors fell to the Hawks in a 84-75 final score.

 

 

 

 

What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will take on the Western Carolina Catamounts in exhibition play on December 30.  They will then kick-off the 2024 year in Harrogate, TN where they will take on the Lincoln Memorial Railsplitters on January 1.  The Warriors will return to Historic Tysinger Gymnasium on January 3 as they host the North Greenville Crusaders.
