Coach Davis says…

"Proud of our team tonight.  We kept giving ourselves opportunities throughout the game.  We kept playing in spurts on both ends which hurt us.  The second chance points in the second half really were the separator.  Looking forward to these next two days of practice in preparation for UNCP."

How It Happened

Virginia State charged out of the gate as Tiyanna James and Mekayla Furman each hit three point shots.  The Trojans kept the Warriors off the board until just under five minutes on the clock.  Lexi Greffen passed the ball in the paint to Shelby Glance who laid it up to put Southern Wesleyan on the board.  Layups by Asia Pearly and Greffen put the Warriors within eight.

Southern Wesleyan fought back in the second quarter as Dynasty Shegog and Tristen Berry each laid the ball up into the net.  However, Virginia State countered with a layup off a fast break by Trinity Moddy.  Dynasty Shegog stole the ball away from Mihjae Hayes and laid it up to put the Warriors behind the Trojans 25-15.  Back-to-back layups by Asia Pearly and Lexi Greffen allowed the Warriors to cut the Trojans lead down to seven.  A layup by Hayes gave the Trojans a 36-25 point lead going into the locker room.

The Warriors kicked off the third quarter as Lexi Greffen stole the ball and raced down the court to lay the ball up into the basket.  A layup by Dynasty Shegog allowed the Warriors to stay within nine points of the Trojans.  Virginia State would not relent as Mekayla Furman, Skylar White and Amesha Miller each made baskets for the Trojans.  Greffen stepped beyond the arc and collected a pass from Taylin Smith before firing off a three pointer.  Last second baskets by Greffen and Shegog cut the Trojans lead down to six.

A layup by Mekayla Furman allowed Virginia State to regain their ten point lead.  It was short lived as Kaliah Kendrick put up her first three point shot of the evening.  The Trojans maintained their intensity as Amesha Miller hit back-to-back baskets.  Shelby Glance collected a pass from Kendrick before stepping beyond the arc to hit a three pointer.  Tristen Berry sunk a three point shot with just under four minutes on the clock.  However, the Trojans won the game in a 76-63 final score.
