How It Happened

UVA Wise broke out of the gate quickly as Zy'ever Wingfield and Patrick Shelly hit threes.  The Cavaliers kept the Warriors scoreless for the first two and a half minutes before a jump shot by Aaron Tims put Southern Wesleyan on the board.  Reco Hallmon stole the ball away from the Cavaliers and took it down the court to sink a jump shut to allow the Warriors to cut the Cavaliers lead in half.  Freshman Jonathan Taylor stole the ball and race down the court to lay it up and put the Warriors down 11-10.  A three pointer out of the hands of Eric Hackett put Southern Wesleyan on top for the first time in the game.  Southern Wesleyan kept the Cavaliers in a scoring drought until the thirteenth minute of the game when Carmelo Pacheo put up a layup.  The Cavaliers would not back down as Calen Lightford hit back-to-back shots from beyond the arc to give UVA Wise a 19-17 point advantage.  However, a three pointer by Josh Martin and a layup by Dyren Brown allowed Southern Wesleyan to take the lead.  Zy'ever Wingfield stole the ball away from Martin and dunked it into the basket.  Jump shots out of the hands of Chad Clark and Hackett allowed the Warriors to maintain the lead, but UVA Wise pushed on with jump shots by Joe'l Pettiford and Shelly to give them a two point lead with just over two minutes on the clock.  The Cavaliers led 39-35 going into the locker room at halftime.

Southern Wesleyan took the first point of the second half on a free throw by Raevon Allen.  However, Zion Fruster hit a three pointer shortly afterwards to extend the Cavaliers lead to eight.  Southern Wesleyan challenged back as layups by Aaron Tims and Reavon Allen allowed them to come back to within four points of the Cavaliers.  UVA Wise would not back down as Fruster stole the ball and took it down on a fast break layup.  Back-to-back steals by Che Smith and Griffin Effenberger led to baskets for the Warriors to keep them within striking distance.  Effenberger collected a pass from Che Smith and stepped beyond the arc to hit a three pointer to put the Warriors down 57-53.  Carmelo Pacheo took a pass from Lav Cvetkovic' and sent the ball into the basket from beyond the arc.  The Cavaliers would not back down as Cvetkovic' and Shelly each put up shots.  Despite a fast break dunk by Dyren Brown off a steal by Che Smith, the Warriors fell to the Cavaliers in a 89-76 final score.
