Warriors Drop Season Opener to Wasps

Belmont, NC – Southern Wesleyan fell to the Emory & Henry Wasps on Friday evening in a 74-51 final score.

The Warriors shot 31.7% from the field in the loss to the Wasps.  Shelby Glance led the team with 10 points.  Dynasty Shegog posted eight points with both Lexi Greffen and Taylin Smith scoring seven points apiece.  Tristen Berry recorded five of the 11 assists.  Southern Wesleyan stole the ball four times with Glance picking up two and both Greffen and Berry having solo steals.  Glance continued her strong start with seven rebounds.  Asia Pearly followed with five.  Glance, Shegog and Pearly each had two blocks.

How It Happened

The Wasps took the first points of the game off a three point shot by Mimi Trayham.  A layup by Emma Santoro extended Emory & Henry's lead to five, but Southern Wesleyan countered as Alexis Glover passed the ball outside the arc to Lexi Greffen.  Greffen sunk her first three point shot of the season to get the Warriors on the board.  A jump shot by Breanna Yarber allowed the Wasps to extend their lead to 10-3.  The Warriors challenged back as Shelby Glance and Taylin Smith each hit three point shots to put the Warriors back within four points of the Wasps.

Southern Wesleyan kicked off the second quarter with a jump shot by Asia Pearly.  A foul on the shot allowed Pearly to take the and one shot.  The Wasps would not back down as Rhyan Harris stepped beyond the arc to sink a three point shot.  Emory & Henry took an eight point lead on a three point shot by Grace Glance.  However, a jump shot by Lexi Greffen put the Warriors back within six.  Breanna Yarber hit a turn around jump shot to give the Wasps a ten point lead, but a jump shot by Shelby Glance allowed the Warriors to cut the lead back down to eight.  Greffen passed the ball up to Taylin Smith who stepped beyond the arc to sink a three point shot.  The Warriors continued to chip away at the Wasps lead as Dynasty Shegog laid the ball up into the basket.  Southern Wesleyan trailed Emory & Henry 36-26 at halftime.

Southern Wesleyan kicked off the third quarter with a layup by Alexis Glover, but a three point shot by Emma Santoro allowed the Wasps to push their lead to eleven.  Tristen Berry passed the ball under the basket to Glover who laid it up into the basket.  The Warriors continued to chip away at the Wasps lead as Kaliah Kendrick laid the ball up into the basket.  A last second layup by Breanna Yarber extend the Wasps lead to 53-38.

Emory & Henry continued to press with baskets by Grace Glance and Rhyan Harris.  Asia Pearly hit a jump shot for the Warriors.  Tristen Berry passed the ball over to Shelby Glance.  Collecting the pass, Glance hit a turn around jump shot.  Seconds later, Glance hit another shot to put the Warriors down by eighteen.  Despite a late layup by Dynasty Shegog, the Warriors dropped the season opener in a 74-51 final score.

 

 

What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will remain in Belmont, NC on November 11 as they take on the Mars Hill Lions at 2pm.  The Warriors will travel to Hartsville, SC on November 15 as they take on the Coker Cobras at 5:30.  They will then host their home opener on November 18 as they welcome the Limestone Saints to Historic Tysinger Gymnasium.
