Home Runs Power Warriors around Braves in Double Header Split on Senior Day

Central, SC – Southern Wesleyan split the series against the UNC Pembroke Braves on Senior Night.  The Warriors dropped the first game 8-3 before claiming a 4-3 game two victory over the Braves.

The Warriors collected four hits in the first game of the afternoon.  Kaitlyn Stewart hit her first career home run, and Delaney Byers doubled.  Southern Wesleyan walked four times and Byers was hit by a pitch.  Faith Bowen started the first game and pitched five innings while striking out one batter.  Emma Collins came in to pitch in relief and struck out two.

Southern Wesleyan recorded five hits in game two of the day with Emma Collins leading the team with two.  Collins hit a home run and tripled in the game.  She was joined in the home run column by Delaney Byers and Lydia Clanton.  Clanton led the team with two of the four RBIs of the day.  Emma Collins pitched a complete game two for Southern Wesleyan and struck out three batters.

How It Happened

Game One
The Braves charged out of the gate as a home run by Adcox and single by Sibbett scored three runs in the top of the first to give them an early lead.

Southern Wesleyan countered in the bottom of the first inning.  Delaney Byers led off the inning with a double to left field.  With two out, Lydia Clanton walked to put two runners on base and bring Faith Bowen up to bat.  Bowen knocked the ball into left field for a single that allowed Byers to score to put the Warriors down 3-1.

The Warriors continued to chip away at the Braves lead as Kaitlyn Stewart hit her career first home run down the left field line to put Southern Wesleyan within one run of UNC Pembroke.

UNC Pembroke was not discouraged as they plated four more runs in the top of the fifth inning off a double by Rose and a home run by Wilkes.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Haley Bertie reached first on a single to left center field.  Bertie advanced to second as Delaney Byers was hit by a pitch.  Addi Johnson walked to load up the bases with no outs.  Lydia Clanton flew out to left field to bring Bertie in to put the Warriors down 7-3.

The Braves went on to take an 8-3 run victory in the first game of the day.
 

Game Two
Southern Wesleyan took the first run of game two as Emma Collins hit a home run over the center field wall to give the Warriors the early 1-0 run lead.

UNC Pembroke countered in the top of the third inning as a double by Brummitt allowed both Sells and Williams to score to put the Braves ahead by one.  They continued to push ahead in the top of the fourth inning as Sibbett tripled to bring in their third run of the game.

The Warriors continued to battle.  With one out in the bottom of the fourth inning, Emma Jo Wolfe singled on a ball hit up the middle.  Lydia Clanton then drilled a ball over the center field wall for a home run to bring both herself and Wolfe in to score and allow Southern Wesleyan to tie the game up at three runs apiece.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Delaney Byers hit a home run over the center field wall to give the Warriors a 4-3 run victory over the UNC Pembroke Braves.
 
 
 
 
What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will travel to Spartanburg, SC on April 9 to take on the Converse Valkyries at noon and 2 p.m.  The Warriors will return to Varsity Field on April 12 to host the Erskine Flying Fleet.  They will then travel to Franklin Springs, GA on April 14 to take on the Emmanuel Lions.
