Warriors Unable to Hold onto Early Lead Against Trojans

Mount Olive, NC – Southern Wesleyan dropped the final game against the University of Mount Olive Trojans on Saturday in a 12-6 final score.

The Warriors recorded 12 hits in the final game of the series against the Trojans.  Ty King Richards led the team with four hits.  He was followed by both Josh Asbill and Will Pitts with two hits.  King Richards and Caden Cotton had doubles.  Both Asbill and Pitts had two of the six RBIs of the day.  Clifton Olmstead was the lone Warrior to walk and record a stole base.

Aaron Bennett started the final game on the mound for the Warriors.  Bennett pitched 6.1 innings while striking out two batters.  TJ McEvilly, Jacob Standridge, Jake Wisniewski and Beau Shaw all came in to pitch in relief for the Warriors.

How It Happened

Mount Olive took the first runs of the final game of the series on Saturday afternoon.  The Trojans brought two runs in to score in the bottom of the third inning off singles by Patierno and Cottle to take an early 2-0 run lead.

Southern Wesleyan battled back in the top of the fourth inning.  Ty King Richards led off the inning with a double to right center field.  Parker Pillsbury was then hit by a pitch to put two runners on with no outs.  DJ Ludwick laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance both runners into scoring position.  With one out, Josh Asbill singled to center field to allow the Warriors to cut the Trojans lead in half as King Richards came in to score.  Will Pitts followed with a single through the left side to bring Pillsbury in to score to tie the game up.  With runners at first and second, Clifton Olmstead singled through the left side to bring Asbill in to score and give the Warriors a 3-2 run advantage.

The Warriors continued to extend their lead in the bottom of the fifth inning.  Caden Cotton led off the inning with a double down the right field line.  A single by Ty King Richards allowed Cotton to advance to third base.  With runners on the corners, Parker Pillsbury singled to right center to bring Cotton in and give the Warriors 4-2 run lead.

In the top of the seventh inning, the Warriors struck again.  Ty King Richards led off with a single to right field.  With one out, DJ Ludwick singled through the left side to allow King Richards to advance to second base.  A single through the right side by Josh Asbill brought King Richards in to score and advanced Ludwick to third.  Will Pitts singled to right field to bring Ludwick in to score to put the Warriors on top 6-2.

Mount Olive fought right back as they regained the lead in the bottom of seventh inning by bringing in seven runs to take a 9-6 run lead.  The Trojans continued to push ahead as they plate three more runs in the bottom of the eighth to win the game in a 12-6 final score.
