Late Rally Not Enough to Push Warriors Past Flying Fleet

Due West, SC – Southern Wesleyan fell to Erskine in a 14-11 final score on Saturday afternoon.

The Warriors put up 12 hits in the loss to the Flying Fleet.  Both Ty King Richards and Zach O'Malley had three hits.  King Richards doubled twice and Josh Asbill had one double.  Clifton Olmstead had the lone home run of the day for Southern Wesleyan.  Southern Wesleyan walked once and two players were hit by pitches.

TJ McEvilly started the final game of the series for Southern Wesleyan and pitched two innings while striking out one batter.  Andrew Patterson, Jacob Standridge, Aaron Bennett and Josh Fenton came in to pitch in relief.  Standridge recorded the other strikeout for the Warriors.

How It Happened

Erskine struck early in the final game of the series as they brought five runs in to score in the bottom of the second inning.

Southern Wesleyan challenged right back in the top of the third inning.  With one out, Dawson Posick singled to shortstop and then advanced to second on a wild pitch.  Ty King Richards hit a double to left center to allow Posick to come in and score to put the Warriors within four runs of the Flying Fleet.  The Warriors were not done as Josh Galloway singled to right field to bring King Richards in to score to make the score 5-2.

The Flying Fleet regained their five run advantage in the bottom of the fourth as they brought two more runs in to score.

The Warriors challenged right back in the top of the fifth inning.  With one out, Ty King Richards doubled to right field and then advanced to third on a ground out by Josh GallowayParker Pillsbury brought King Richards in to score as he hit a single through the right side.

Clifton Olmstead led off the top of the sixth inning for the Warriors with a home run over the left field wall to put them within three runs of the Flying Fleet.  Josh Asbill followed with a double to right center and advanced to third on a fly out to right field by DJ Ludwick.  With one out and Asbill in scoring position, Chance Fogel singled to right field to allow Asbill to come in and score to make the score 7-5.

Erskine continued to push ahead as they scored seven more runs in the seventh and eighth inning to extend their lead to 14-5.

The Warriors came in to score again in the top of the ninth.  With one out, Caden Cotton was hit by a pitch.  Zach O'Malley and Clifton Olmstead walked back-to-back to load up the bases.  A wild pitched allowed Cotton to come in to score.  Josh Asbill then grounded out to second base to bring O'Malley in and put Southern Wesleyan within seven runs of Erskine.  An error by the short stop allowed DJ Ludwick to reach first and brought Olmstead in to score.  Dawson Posick singled to advance Ludwick to second base.  Chance Fogel drilled the ball to right center for a double that advanced Posick to third and brought Ludwick in to score to put the Warriors down 14-9.  Ty King Richards was able to out run a ball hit to the short stop for a single to allow Posick to score and advance Fogel to third base.  Josh Galloway walked to load the bases back up and bring Caden Cotton back up to bat for the second time in the inning.  Cotton singled through the right side to bring Fogel in to score.  However, the Warriors would fall to the Flying Fleet in a 14-11 final score.



 
What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will return to Dr. C Keith Connor Field on April 22-23 as they host the Belmont Abbey Crusaders.  They will remain at home on April 26 as they host the Georgia College Bobcats at 4 p.m.  The Warriors will wrap up the Spring 2022 season on the road as they travel to Mount Olive, NC to take on the University of Mount Olive Trojans.
