Warriors Challenge Crusaders in Loss on the Road

Tigerville, SC – Southern Wesleyan dropped both games to the North Greenville Crusaders on Saturday afternoon.  The Warriors fell in the first game 9-6 before dropping the second game 14-5.
 
Southern Wesleyan recorded 11 hits in the first game of the day.  Addi Johnson led the team with three hits on the afternoon while three Warriors followed with two hits.  Lydia Clanton doubled and Mary Sullivan homered.  Clanton led the team with two of the five RBIs.  Faith Bowen was the lone Warrior to walk, and both Johnson and Sullivan stole bases.  Bowen started the first game for Southern Wesleyan and pitched 5.2 innings while striking out two. 
 
The Warriors collected seven hits in the second game of the day.  Emma Jo Wolfe led the team with two hits.  Delaney Byers doubled and Emma Collins recorded a triple in the loss.  Faith Bowen picked up two of the five RBIs of the afternoon.  The Warriors walked three times and both Byers and Addi Johnson stole bases.  Faith Bowens started the second game and struck out one over one inning pitched.  Both Byers and Emma Collins came in to pitch in relief for Southern Wesleyan.

How It Happened
 
Game One
Southern Wesleyan took the first run of the game in the top of the first inning.  With one out, Addi Johnson singled to center field and then stole second base to put her in scoring position.  A groundout by Faith Bowen allowed Johnson to advance to third base.  Lydia Clanton singled through the left side to bring Johnson in to give the Warriors a 1-0 run lead.
 
Mary Sullivan swung for the fences to kick-off the top of the second inning for a home run to give the Warriors a 2-0 lead.  With two outs, Delaney Byers singled up the middle and then advance to second on a single to left field by Addi JohnsonFaith Bowen hit a single up the middle to bring Byers in to score and advanced Johnson to third base.  Lydia Clanton then reached on a dropped fly ball to bring Johnson across home plate and give the Warriors a 4-0 run lead.
 
The Warriors continued to attack the plate in the top of the fourth inning.  Delaney Byers led off the inning with a single to right field and then advanced to second on a ground out by Addi JohnsonFaith Bowen walked to put two on with one out.  Lydia Clanton drilled the ball down the ball down the left field line for a double that allowed Byers to come in to score and give the Warriors a 5-0 lead.
 
North Greenville countered with a run of their own in the bottom of the fourth inning to put them within four runs of Southern Wesleyan.
 
Southern Wesleyan struck again in the top of the fifth inning.  With one out, Mary Sullivan singled down the third base line.  Sullivan then stole second to get in score position.  With two outs, Delaney Byers was hit by a pitch.  Addi Johnson then singled up the middle to bring Sullivan home to put the Warriors ahead 6-1.
 
The Crusaders continued to challenge in the top of the fifth inning as Pride and Koon each drove in runs to make the score 6-3 in the Warriors favor.  North Greenville scored again in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings to win the first game of the day in a 9-6 final.
 
 
 
Game Two
Southern Wesleyan took the first run of the second game of the day.  Delaney Byers was hit by a pitch to lead off, but was out on the next play as Addi Johnson hit into a fielder's choice.  A wild pitch allowed Johnson to advance to second.  Lydia Clanton hit a single up the middle to bring Johnson in to score.
 
North Greenville countered in the bottom of the first as doubles and a single allowed five runs to come in and score and give the Crusaders a 5-1 run lead.  The Crusaders extended their lead to 9-1 in the bottom of the third inning.
 
The Warriors fought back in the top of the fourth inning.  Kaitlyn Stewart led off with a walk and then advanced to second on a wild pitch.  With one out, Emma Collins tripled to left field to allow Stewart to come in and score.  Delaney Byers followed with a double to right center that allowed Collins to score to put Southern Wesleyan behind North Greenville 9-3.  A dropped fly ball by the right fielder allowed Addi Johnson to reach first.  Johnson then stole second to put both runners in scoring position.  Faith Bowen singled to shortstop to allow both Byers and Johnson to come in to score to put the Warriors down 9-5 to the Crusaders.
 
North Greenville continued to push ahead as they brought in five more runs to score in the bottom of the fourth inning to win the game 14-5.
 
 
 
 
 
What's Next
 
Southern Wesleyan will return to Varsity Field on March 22 as they host USC Salkahatchie in exhibition play at 3 and 5 p.m.  They Warriors will resume Conference Carolinas action on March 25 to host the Lees-McRae Bobcats at 2 and 4 p.m.  They will then host the Francis Marion Patriots at noon and 2 p.m. on March 26.
