Southern Wesleyan Drops Road Contest to Newberry

Newberry, SC – Southern Wesleyan fell on the road to the Newberry Wolves in a 16-4 final score.
 
The Warriors took 10 shots and nine shots on goal in the loss to the Wolves.  Kelsey Hawkins led the team with three shots on goal.  She was followed by Tabitha Beecher with two shots on goal.  Hawkins recorded two of the four goals for Southern Wesleyan.  Jairy Sandoval and Ansley Burroughs also scored for the Warriors.  Of the three assists of the day for the Warriors, Beecher led the team with two.  The Warriors went on to collect eight ground balls and cause four turnovers.  Kaeleigh McDaniel played all sixty minutes in goal and collected 19 saves.

How It Happened
 
Newberry rushed out of the gate as they scored five goals in the first ten minutes of action.  Southern Wesleyan counted with just under three minutes left in the quarter as Tabitha Beecher passed the ball over to Ansley Burroughs.  Burroughs put the ball into the back of the cage to allow the Warriors to come within four of the Wolves.
 
Southern Wesleyan continued to challenge as Madison Brugger passed the ball over to Jairy Sandoval who rush to the cage and put the ball into the back of the net.  Newberry was not discouraged as both Kendall Sewell and MacKenzie Watson scored to extend the Wolves lead to 8-2.
 
The Wolves continued to push ahead and shut down the Warriors offense in the third quarter.  Goals by Chloe Wood, Sierra Hummell and Watson allowed Newberry to take a 13-2 goal advantage over the visiting Warriors of Southern Wesleyan.
 
The Wolves continued to push ahead, but the Warriors challenged right back.  Tabitha Beecher took a shot on the goal, but goalkeeper Nicole Harker was able to prevent the attack from paying off.  Kelsey Hawkins scored back-to-back goals for the Warriors.  However, the Wolves walked away with a 16-4 victory.
 
 
What's Next
 
Southern Wesleyan will return to Childs Field on February 28 as they welcome the Wilmington Wildcats to Central, SC for a 6 p.m. first draw.  The Warriors will then open up Conference Carolinas action on March 5 as they host the Lees-McRae Bobcats.  Southern Wesleyan will travel to Mount Olive, Nc on March 10 to take on the University of Mount Olive Trojans at noon.
