Warriors Fall in Conference Carolinas Pool Play

Bristol, TN – Southern Wesleyan dropped both matches in the Conference Carolinas Championship pool play on Saturday afternoon.  The Warriors fell to the King Tornado in the first game 3-1 before dropping the second match to the Erskine Flying Fleet 3-0.

Southern Wesleyan recorded 41 kills with Olivia Johnson leading the team with 12.  Ashley Sexton led the team with 22 assists with Kali Letcher following with 15.  Both Ashlyn Holford and Sexton had service aces.  Southern Wesleyan had 13 blocks with Danairi Malave leading the team with four.  Johnson had 20 digs.  Kaylyn Woods followed with 14 and Jesse Soles recorded 11.

The Warriors had 25 kills in the loss with Olivia Johnson leading the team with seven.  Amber Bass followed with five.  Southern Wesleyan had 24 assists with Ashley Sexton leading the team with 13.  Jesse Soles had two of the four aces.  Southern Wesleyan had three blocks.  Both Johnson and Kaylyn Woods had 15 digs in game two.

How It Happened

SWU vs King
Set One
King took the first point of the game, but kills by Ashlyn Holford and Amber Bass allowed the Warriors to take a 2-1 point lead.  Holford put down an ace to extend the Warriors lead to 3-1.  However, the Tornado push ahead with aces by Julie Ward and a kill by Brittney Ramsey.  King continued to attack the court with kills by Kayley Holtzclaw and Hailee Blankenship, but Southern Wesleyan countered with a kill by Olivia Johnson.  Despite kills by Emily Ellis, the Tornado took the first set 25-16.
 
Set Two
Southern Wesleyan took the first point of the second set on a kill by Ashlyn Holford, but a kill by Brittney Ramsey allowed King to tie it up 2-2.  Danairi Malave laid down a kill to put the Warriors ahead 4-2, but the Tornado countered with a kill by Julie Ward.  The Tornado maintained the pressure, taking a 6-5 point lead on a kill by Kayley Holtzclaw.  King maintained the intensity, but a kill by Zharia Harris kept the Warriors within three points of the Tornado.  The Tornado continued to push ahead, but a block by Malave and Olivia Johnson put the Warriors down by four.  However, despite a late kill by Amber Bass, the Tornado went on to win the second set 25-17.
 
Set Three
The Warriors charged out of the gate in the third set with kills by Ashlyn Holford and Emily Ellis to put them ahead 3-0.  Southern Wesleyan extended their lead on a double block by Holford and Jesse Soles, but King countered with a kill by Julie Ward to put the score at 4-1.  Another kill by Ellis allowed Southern Wesleyan to extend their lead to 7-1.  The Tornado came to 9-11 behind the Warriors on kills by Kayley Holtzclaw and Ward.  Southern Wesleyan kept a two point lead on a kill by Holford.  Southern Wesleyan maintained the intensity with kills by Jesse Soles, Johnson and Ellis to give them an 18-12 point lead.  The Tornado continued to challenge, but the Warriors continued to push ahead with kills by Amber Bass and Holford to give them a 23-20 point lead.  With blocks by Holford and Soles, the Warriors took the third set 25-21.
 
Set Four
Southern Wesleyan took the first point off a kill by Ashlyn Holford, but King countered with a kill by Julie Ward to take a 2-1 lead.  The Tornado maintained the lead with kills by Hailee Blankenship and Ward.  Olivia Johnson laid down a kill for Southern Wesleyan.  King continued to push ahead with kills by Kayley Hotlzclaw and Allie Zimmerman.  Despite kills by Holford and Danairi Malave, King won the final set 25-12.

 
SWU vs Erskine
Set One
The Warriors took the first point of the game, but then the Flying Fleet countered on a kill by Rebecca Massengill and ace by Reilly Bartlett to put them ahead 2-1.  Amber Bass laid down a kill, but the Flying Fleet continued to push ahead with kills by Lainie Loving.  Erskine continued to distance themselves despite kills by Danairi Malave and Olivia Johnson.  The Flying Fleet went on to win the first set 25-16.
 
Set Two
Southern Wesleyan kicked off the second set with a kill by Ashlyn Holford, but Erskine countered with a kill by Reilly Bartlett.  A kill by Danairi Malave and an ace by Kali Letcher allowed Southern Wesleyan to keep the second set close.  However, Erskine continued to push ahead on kills by Katy Torgerson, but the Warriors were not discouraged as Amber Bass put down kills for Southern Wesleyan.  Despite a late ace by Jesse Soles, the Flying Fleet pushed ahead to win the second set 25-21.
 
Set Three
Erskine took the earl 3-0 lead on a kill by Kaile Tuisamatatele, but the Warriors came to within one behind the Flying Fleet on a kill by Emily Ellis and ace by Ashlyn Holford.  The Warriors continued to push ahead with another kill by Ellis.  However, Erskine was not deterred as Maddie Wilson and Katy Torgerson blocked Southern Wesleyan's attacks.  The Warriors challenged with kills by Jesse Soles, Olivia Johnson and Amber Bass, but the Flying Fleet ended up on top in a 25-20 final.
