Southern Wesleyan Drops Tough Game to Mount Olive

Central, SC – Southern Wesleyan fell to the University of Mount Olive in Conference Carolinas action on Monday afternoon in a 92-44 final score.

The Warriors shot 30.2% from the field and went 72.7% from the free throw line in the loss to the Trojans.  Emily Waters led the team with 11 points.  She was followed by Denisha Hall with 10.  Four Warriors recorded assists in the loss.  Southern Wesleyan collected 20 rebounds with Lisana Burnett leading the team with six.  Burnett and Hall led the team with two steals each.  Burnett went on to record the lone block of the afternoon.

How It Happened

The University of Mount Olive jumped out early as Azariah Fields made a layup to give them a 2-0 advantage.  Southern Wesleyan continued to pressure as Madi Hartgrove sunk a three point basket to put the Warriors down one point to the Trojans.  Mount Olive continued to push ahead, taking an 8-3 point lead on jump shot by Ivanda Hudjakova, but a layup by Denisha Hall kept the Warriors within three.

The Trojans kicked off the second quarter with a three pointer by Makayla Nichols despite the Warriors running them to the end of the shot clock.  Southern Wesleyan continued to pressure back with shot attempts by Aneysa Williams and Tanayja Williams, but the Trojans pushed back to keep them off the board in the second quarter.  The Warriors got on the board in the second quarter on a jump shot by Denisha Hall to put Southern Wesleyan behind Mount Olive 33-9.  The Trojans led the Warriors 43-13 at the half.

Mount Olive took the first points of the third quarter on free throw shots by Ivanda Hudjakova, but Southern Wesleyan countered with a layup by Lisana Burnett to put the score at 45-15.  The Warriors continued to fight with layups by Emily Waters and Denisha Hall, but the Trojans continued to bring the heat as they took a 37-point lead on a layup by Azariah Fields.

The Trojans continued to push ahead on baskets by Kelly Post and Michelle Stewart, but the Warriors would not be discouraged as Lisana Burnett made a layup.  Southern Wesleyan continued to up the pressure as Burnett and Denisha Hall made jump shots and Madi Hartgrove sunk a 3-pointer to make the score 79-35.  Despite a last second layup by Emily Waters, Mount Olive went on to win the game in a 92-44 final score.

 

What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will next travel to Murfreesboro, NC to take on the Chowan Hawks on January 25.  They will then return to Historic Tysinger Gymnasium on January 29 to host the Emmanuel Lions at 5:30 p.m.  The Warriors will remain at home on February 1 as they welcome the Limestone Saints to the court.
