Warriors Rally in Second Half, but Cannot Pass Flying Fleet

Due West, SC – Southern Wesleyan dropped the Conference Carolinas match-up to the Erskine Flying Fleet in a 63-52 final.

The Warriors shot 33.3% from the field in the loss to the Flying Fleet.  Aneysa Williams and Tanayja Williams led Southern Wesleayn, each recording 11 points.  Denisha Hall followed with 10 points.  Southern Wesleyan recorded nine assists with Lisana Burnett leading the them with three.

Southern Wesleyan recorded 43 rebounds in the loss.  Lisana Burnett led the team with 20 rebounds during the game.  The Warriors had 10 steals.  Burnett led the team with three, Tanayja Williams and Madi Hartgrove followed with two apiece.  Emily Waters recorded the lone block of the game.

How It Happened

Erskine jumped out early as Alexis Scott laid the ball up to give them a 2-0 lead.  A jump shot by Tanayja Williams allowed the Warriors to tie the game up at two, and then a layup by Denisha Hall put the Warriors ahead 4-2.  However, the Flying Fleet went on a 14-point run to take a 16-4 point lead over Southern Wesleyan.  Free throws by Lisana Burnett put the Warriors down 6-16.

The Flying Fleet were the first on the board in the second quarter as Madison Whitt made a layup to give them a 6-18 point advantage.  Southern Wesleyan countered as Lisana Burnett stole the ball away and made a layup to keep the Warriors within ten points.  The Warriors continued to challenge as Tanayja Williams put up a 3-pointer off an assist by Brooke Henricks.  The Flying Fleet continued to push ahead, but the Warriors countered as Henricks made a jump shot to put Southern Wesleyan within eight.  Denisha Hall put up a last second three point shot to allow the Warriors to trail 22-30.

Southern Wesleyan kicked off the third quarter with a three point basket by Aneysa Williams off a pass from Lisana Burnett.  The Warriors continued to chip away the Flying Fleets lead with baskets by Tanayja Williams and Aneysa Williams.  Aneysa Williams was fouled making a layup, and then made her free throw to tie the game 32-32.  However, Erskine quickly countered with a basket of their own to regain the lead.

The Warriors kicked off the fourth quarter with a layup by Lisana Burnett to put them 39-43 behind the Flying Fleet, and then a 3-pointer by Aneysa Williams allowed Southern Wesleyan to come within one point.  Southern Wesleyan continued to challenge with a jump shot by Emily Waters, but Erskine fought right back with a jump shot by Emani Bell to put them back on top.  The Warriors would not be discouraged as Waters put up another jump shot to give them a 46-45 point lead.  Despite the late challenge by Southern Wesleyan, Erskine went on to win the game in a 63-52 final score.

 

What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will return to Historic Tysinger Gymnasium as they host the Barton Bulldogs on January 18 at 2 p.m.  They will remain at home on January 20 as they host the University of Mount Olive Trojans at 2 p.m.
