Late Rally Not Enough for Victory

Franklin Springs, GA - Southern Wesleyan fell to the Emmanuel College Lions in Conference Carolinas action in a final score of 73-60.

 

Darius Sharpe led the Warriors with 16 points in the loss. He was followed by Jemiah Wimphrie (15), De'Quan Weldon (14), and Justice McCullough (10). Southern Wesleyan posted a 53.1% field goal percentage and went 3-10 at the free throw line. Weldon and Sharpe led the team in assists with three apiece. Darrian Brown and Tyus Gaines each had two. 

 

Southern Wesleyan posted 32 rebounds compared to the 27 made by Emmanuel. Jemiah Wimphrie led the team with nine rebounds in the loss. He was followed by Justice McCullough with seven. McCullough and JT Noellert each had a block during the game. Weldon led the team in steals with 3 of the 5 made by the Warriors.

"We got off to a slow start and never recovered.  Time after time we emphasize how important it is to start the game with high energy and emotions.  We battled back but couldn't get over the hump."

 

 

How It Happened

The Emmanuel College Lions struck first in the contest against the Warriors on Tuesday evening with a 3-pointer from Ronnie Stanley. They took an early 8-0 lead. A layup from Zalan Richards put the Warriors on the board. Jemiah Wimphrie made several shots to put the Warriors within seven of the Lions at 13-20. The Lions rallied and continued to increase their lead. Free throws from Justice McCullough put the Warriors within nine at 20-29. Despite late shots from Wimphrie and McCullough, the Lions held onto their lead at the half 36-25.

 

The Lions made back-to-back shots to start the second half and lead 40-25. Darius Sharpe made three 3-pointers in the battle to bring the Warriors back within seven. He followed that with a dunk and De'Quan Weldon followed with a jump shot to only trail 44-51. McCullough and Weldon made several jump shots to trail 56-66 as both teams continued to fight. Although there were late shots from Sharpe and Weldon, the Warriors were unable to come out on top. The Lions won the game 73-60.

 

What's Next

The Warriors will return home on Friday, February 24 at 7:30 p.m. to recognize their Seniors. They will face the Limestone Saints in their last regular season game.
