Box Score Wilson, N.C. – Cayse Branyon, Tatiana Manuel and Aneysa Williams combine to contribute 20 points in the loss to the Barton College Bulldogs. Branyon lead the team with eight points while Manuel and Williams followed with six points apiece. Tomi Sanchez and Kristen Smith led the team in rebounds with three each.
The Bulldogs struck first with a layup by Kianna Wynn. They quickly increased their lead to 7-0 on a three point jump shot by Tatiyana Jackson. The Warriors cut the lead down on a layup made by Tatiana Manuel. A jump shot by Manuel cut the Bulldog lead down to 9-6. With four minutes left in the first quarter, Tomi Sanchez made a jump shot to bring the Warriors to only five points behind the Bulldogs and take the score to 15-10.
Kianna Wynn and the Barton Bulldogs scored first in the second quarter to take a 25-14 lead over the Warriors. Kristen Smith made a three point jump shot to bring the game to 28-17, however the Bulldogs quickly pulled ahead taking the game to 30-17 before Aneysa Williams scored a layup to give the Warriors 19 points on the board. Barton pulled ahead by twenty on a layup by Kerimah Dean. Cayse Branyon made a three point jump shot to make the score 48-25, but the Bulldogs scored three more points before the end of the first half of the game.
The Warriors scored first in the second half on a three point jump shot by Shelby Gilbert. Aneysa Williams made a layup to bring the Warriors back within twenty points of the Bulldogs and brought the score to 54-34. However, Barton College was not finished as Alonna Terrell made two layups in a row to give the Bulldogs a 62-36 lead over the Warriors.
The Bulldogs surged ahead scoring on shots made by Karimah Dean and Alex Kimble to bring the score to 74-37. Kasey Howard scored two free throws to give the Warriors two more points on the board, however Bulldog Alex Kimble scored a three point jump shot to regain a 38-point lead over the Warriors. Tatiyana Mahone and Taylor Vinson scored four points for the Warriors, but the Bulldogs countered on layups by Kianna Wynn and Angela Caraballo. The Bulldogs won the game with a final score of 96-49.
"Tonight we just got beat," said Head Women's Basketball Coach John Davis. He continued, "Barton played extremely well and we did not get off the bus. Our mental approach was poor and it showed from the onset. For us to take the next step as a program, we have to be able to approach every game with great preparation on and off the floor. That's where I plan on helping this program get to. We have the players to do so."
The Warriors made 23 rebounds in the evening compared to the 60 rebounds had by the Barton College Bulldogs. Southern Wesleyan had a 29.1% field goal percentage and had seven assists in the evening's game. The Warriors surrendered 18 turnovers. Cayse Branyon lead the team in steals with two steals, she is followed by Tatiana Manuel and Erika Wesolek with one steal apiece. Manuel also had five blocks. Kasey Howard led the team with two assists.
The loss for the Warriors makes their record become 3-7 and 1-5 in Conference Carolina play while the Barton College Bulldogs becomes 7-5 and 4-2 in Conference action. Southern Wesleyan will next play at University of Mount Olive at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 7. They will then travel to Erskine College to take on the Flying Fleet on January 11.
