Box Score Sarah Hughey and Paige O'Connor combine for 19 kills in the loss to the King University Tornado.
The Tornado of King University struck first in the Conference Carolina Quarterfinal, but the Warriors countered putting two points quickly on the board to take the lead. A save from Milica Stamenic leads the Warriors to rally to take a 5-4 lead, but Tornado was not finished as they tied it back up once more. Set one went back and forth, with the Tornado and the Warriors trading the lead back-and-forth up to the first time-out with the score at Tornado 17 and Warriors 14. The Tornado gained the biggest lead of the evening going 18-14, but the Warriors rallied to bring the score to 18-16. A block by Kendall Vallancourt and Paige O'Connor allows the Warriors to shorten the difference to 18-17, however the King Tornado pull ahead to lead 21-17. The King Tornado took the first set of the evening 25-20.
Like in the first set, the King Tornado struck first. However, a save from O'Connor allows the Warriors to rally to tie the set up 1-1. The Tornado swept forward, taking a 6-4 lead over the Warriors of Southern Wesleyan. With the Tornado in the lead, the Warriors get one by the Tornado defense to short the lead to 15-8. Sarah Hughey spiked one over the net to assist the Warriors and bring the score to 18-12. The Warriors were not done yet, scoring two more points to bring the score to 20-14 and then again to take it to 21-17. Despite the Warrior rally, the Tornado took the second set of the evening 25-19.
King took an early 2-0 lead in the third set. The Warriors were not going to let the Tornado advance easily, taking serves by Vallancourt and tying the set 7-7. The energy in the stands fueling them, the Warriors brought the game to Tornado only leading by one and the score 12-11. A pass from Shelby Sheets to Annika Jones allows the Warriors to get another point on the board with the Tornado leading 22-15. S. Hughey attacks the ball to score another for the Warriors, bringing the difference down to 22-17. The King University Tornado take the third set of the evening 25-19, winning the match 3-0.
"Tonight was rough but hats off to King!" said Head Coach Julia Reininga. She continued, "They played with fire! We will rest and recover and get ready for NCCAA Regionals."
Annika Jones contributes with 23 assists, and Milica Stamenic and Anna Hughey combine for 20 digs in the loss. The loss brings the Warrior record to 14-11 and 12-5 in Conference Carolina action. The King Tornado go to 13-14 and 12-5. The Warriors will next compete in the NCCAA Regionals.
