The Eagles of Carson-Newman University took a quick lead over the Warriors, scoring twenty-five points in comparison to the Warriors 8 in the first seven minutes of basketball. The Warriors were not going to let that stop them, taking the game to 30 to the Eagles 48 with three minutes left in the first half. Carson-Newman soared ahead by the half to lead 56-39.
The Eagles were not done after half-time, charging ahead to lead 70-44. The Warriors strengthen to take the lead down 84-66. In the last half of the second half, the Warriors mounted a rally, bringing the score to 104-83. However, their rally could not bring them to a win against Carson-Newman University falling in their first game of the season 106-83.
"The first 8 minutes of the game was our downfall," said Head Men's Basketball Coach Charles Wimphrie. He continued, "We didn't execute our offense and mistakes and missed assignments on defense hurt us. Carson-Newman is a very good team and they took advantage of our mistakes. I'm proud of the team but we have to eliminate our mental mistakes."
The loss for the Warriors brings their record to 0-1 and 0-0 in Conference Carolina action. The Carson-Newman University Eagles go to 1-0 and 0-0 in conference. The Southern Wesleyan University Warriors will next take on Brevard College on Saturday, November 12 at 5:30 in the Lander University Tip-Off Classic.
