Holmes Leads Warriors to First Conference Win of the Season

CENTRAL, S.C.‑ Kenny Holmes scored a season-high 32 points in Southern Wesleyan's 87-86 double-overtime victory over Belmont Abbey for its first conference win of the season.

Holmes shot 11-for-23 from the field and 8-for-8 from the free-throw line. He also grabbed seven rebounds and dished out six assists. Darius Sharpe scored 16 points and had two steals. Chandler Harrison scored 13 points and grabbed three rebounds.

The Warriors (2-11, 1-4 CC) started the game with a 19-15 run for an early four-point lead. The Crusaders (3-9, 0-5 CC) cut the lead to one with an 18-15 run to close out the first half. They re-took the lead at the 15:43 mark of the second half. They would hold onto it for more than nine minutes when Southern Wesleyan re-gained the lead at the 6:02 mark. The teams traded the lead back and forth until the Warriors tied the game with 23 seconds remaining on two free throws by Holmes. The Crusaders turned the ball over on their ensuing possession with one second remaining to send the game to overtime.

In the first overtime period, Holmes scored six consecutive points to give Southern Wesleyan a six-point advantage. They stretched it to eight with two free throws by Justice McCullough. Belmont Abbey countered with eight straight points of their own to tie the game at 75. Holmes made two more free throws and the Crusaders made two more free throws to tie the game again at 77. Both teams missed their next shots to send the game to a second overtime period.

The teams traded buckets early in the second overtime period. Belmont Abbey made a free throw with 34 seconds left for an 86-85 lead. Holmes was fouled with eight seconds left and made both free throws to give the Warriors a one-point lead. They forced a turnover with one second left to seal the game.

"I think we grew up a little tonight," said Warriors Head Coach Charles Wimphrie. "We were able to get key defensive stops and rebounds. We have had problems finishing games, but tonight we did the necessary things to finish the game."
