Box Score 2 FLORENCE, ALA. - The Southern Wesleyan volleyball team wrapped up competition at the North Alabama Invite on Saturday as the team went 1-1 on the day. The Warriors defeated Kentucky Wesleyan 3-0 in the morning's match before falling to host school North Alabama 3-1 in the team's last of four matches in the tournament. On Friday, Southern Wesleyan defeated Quincy 3-0 in their first match, but fell to Montevallo 3-2 in a five set nail-biter. Julia Reininga's team is now 5-4 on the season.
On Saturday, Southern Wesleyan came out with a vengeance against Kentucky Wesleyan. On offense, Sarah Hughey, Paige O'Connor and Megan Widener continue to pace the Warriors. O' Connor (10) and Hughey (12) both recorded double digit kills while Widener added 30 assists from the setter position.
In the second match of the day, host school North Alabama proved to be a challenge. The Lions, who won all four of their matches in the tournament, took sets one, three and four from the Warriors to steal the match. Hughey (24) and O'Connor (12) again racked up double digit kills, as they did in every match of the tournament. Katie Anderson added 12 digs and Widener had 43 assists.
"It was a great weekend of volleyball," Reininga said. " We are happy we took a set against a good UNA team. These out of conference matches have shown us a lot and I'm excited about what I've seen."
The Warriors return to action Tuesday Sept. 15 at Limestone. Gametime is set for 7 p.m. Southern Wesleyan is back at home on Friday Sept. 18 against King at 7 p.m. in the first conference game of the season.
