Southern Wesleyan Trumps Belmont Abbey 3-1 Friday Night in Tysinger

CENTRAL, S.C. - Julia Reininga's volleyball team picked up a 3-1 win over Belmont Abbey in front of a raucous home crowd on Friday night in Tysinger Gymnasium. With the win, the Warriors improve to 17-6 overall and 12-2 in conference play while the Crusaders fall to 14-10 and 8-5 in Conference Carolinas. 

"Tonight's crowd was amazing so I have to give credit to our fans for helping lift us to a win," said Reininga. "Belmont Abbey is a very good team, so this is a great win for our program."

The Warriors won the opening set 25-19 before Belmont Abbey stormed back to take the second set 25-23. Southern Wesleyan would rebound to win the third and fourth sets 26-24 and 25-14, respectively. The Warriors hit as high as .464 (fourth set) but never below .238 (third set). 

Sarah Hughey was a force to be reckoned with, leading all players with 28 kills on the night. The senior hit an astonishing .658 in the match. She also added 11 digs, three assists, and three blocks to pace the Warriors. 

Megan Widener also had an impressive outing as the senior setter racked up 54 assists in the win on over 113 attempts. She also contributed two aces and 13 digs. 

Milica Stamenic had 16 digs while Paige O'Connor (14) and Katie Anderson (10) both had double digit kills as well. 

Southern Wesleyan returns to the court Saturday, Oct. 31 against Pfeiffer. Saturday is homecoming for the Warriors, with first serve set for 5 p.m.
