SWU Volleyball takes conference opener 3-0 over Belmont Abbey

BELMONT, N.C. – Southern Wesleyan volleyball jumped into Conference Carolinas play with a three-game sweep of two-time defending conference champion Belmont Abbey on Friday night.

The Warriors have won six of their last seven after a 1-2 start.  The Warriors will continue conference action on Saturday, heading to Pfeiffer for a 2 p.m. first serve.

SWU (7-3, 1-0) won in straight sets for the sixth time this season with the 25-21, 25-19, 25-19 win.  Three players were in double figures led by Alysia Cruell's 12 kills. Cruell tied a season-high with that mark and has reached double figures three times this year.  Cruell hit .429 for the match while the Warriors managed just an .187 output.  Cruell also led the team with 10 digs to record her second double-double of the year and first since the first match of the year.

Jacinta Hoffpauir and Cherilyn Ramsey both collected 10 kills as Megan Widener added 30 assists.  Milicia Stamenic had four of the team's nine aces and also added nine digs of her own, one of three players to record nine digs.  Courtney O'Brien was one of those players with nine digs and also added seven assists and two kills. Sarah Hughey also had nine digs and added eight kills.

Belmont Abbey was led by Hannah Schellenberg's 10 kills as the Crusaders hit just .091. 

These two teams will not meet again as SWU plays in the South Division in Conference Carolinas and Belmont Abbey is in the North.
