Triple Headed Attack Leads Warriors Past Belmont Abbey

BELMONT, N.C. – Kenny Holmes, Buster Walker and Cameron Solomon combined for 71 points as Southern Wesleyan snapped a four-game losing streak on Tuesday night with an 82-70 win over Belmont Abbey in a matchup of Conference Carolinas foes.

Belmont Abbey () raced out of the gate with five made three pointers – they made 12 of 29 on the night – and led 15-11 after seven minutes. Solomon followed with a layup and Holmes added a three as the Warriors took their first lead of the game at 16-15 with 12:01 left in the half. Solomon added five more points to complete the 10-0 run.

The Warriors kept the lead the rest of the half, pushing the margin out to seven on several occasions. The Crusaders closed the gap late and tied the score twice in the final 1:10 as the teams headed to the break tied at 37-37.

Belmont Abbey knocked down eight of their 12 threes in the first half as Markel Pollard scored 19 of his 24 before halftime. In the second half the Warriors held Belmont Abbey to just 31 percent shooting from the floor and just 25 percent from beyond the arc, compared to 48 and 62 percent before halftime.

Both Solomon and Holmes had greater outputs after halftime after each scoring 11 points in the first half. Solomon followed that effort up with 18 in the second half to finish with 29, his fourth 20+ point effort on the season. Holmes added 13 in the second half to top the 20-point mark for the first time this season. Walker scored nine points in each half.

The Warriors started the second half with a 7-0 run to take the lead at 44-37. The Crusaders came back to take the lead at 52-51 on a Nick Hough three with 11:32 to play. The lead changed hands seven times after that before the Warriors took the lead at 65-64 on a layup from Solomon. That started an 11-2 run that gave the Warriors a 74-66 lead with just 1:40 to play.

Hough made a pair of free throws to cut into the Warriors lead but down the stretch the Crusaders missed their final five field goal attempts as the Warriors connected on 8 of 10 free throws to pull away and seal the win.

SWU made 19 of 26 from the line in the game and shot 53 percent from the floor including making 5 of 11 from long range. Mike Lieberman added seven points and seven rebounds for the Warriors. Walker added five rebounds to go along with his 18 points.

 The Warriors will head to Pfeiffer on Saturday for a 7:30 p.m. tip.
