Men's Basketball Drops Third Straight, Erskine Rallies for 74-67 Win

Box Score

CENTRAL, S.C. – After leading the entire first half, Southern Wesleyan fell behind in the second half and couldn't recover as Erskine pulled out a 74-67 win over the Warriors in Conference Carolinas action on Tuesday night in Tysinger Gymnasium.

Buster Walker scored 18 points and Dwayne Bryant grabbed 12 of the team's 41 rebounds but it wasn't enough as the Warriors shot just 36 percent in the second half.  SWU (1-5, 1-1 CC) dominated on the glass with a plus-17 advantage but the Flying Fleet (1-3, 1-1 CC) didn't need a lot of second chances after connecting on 56 percent of their field goals in the second half.

Erskine hit 10 three-pointers in the contest including four from Arvel Atwater while the Warriors struggled from beyond the arc to the tune of 6-for-21.  Cameron Solomon connected on three treys but needed 10 attempts to get there. Kenny Holmes made two triples.

The Warriors took their largest lead with 2:34 left in the first half, leading 34-21 but the Flying Fleet outscored the Warriors 9-2 to close the half to pull within six at 36-30. Erskine continued their momentum into the second half, tying the game with back-to-back threes to start the half.  Solomon answered with a three of his own to put the Warriors back on top and did so again with 15:49 to play when Erskine tied the game at 40-40.

An 11-2 run by Erskine turned around a five-point deficit but the Warriors rallied to climb back within a point as Holmes knocked down a three.  Erskine's Justin Cofer answered with a three of his own to push the lead back to four as the Flying Fleet took control of the game over the final 11 minutes.

SWU pulled back within four at 62-58 with 3:18 to play but back-to-back baskets by the Flying Fleet sandwhiched between one of the Warriors' 19 turnovers put the game out of reach.

Solomon and Holmes each finished with 12 points to join Walker in double figures.  Bryant's 12 boards are a season-high and mark just the second time the senior has reached double figures in rebounds this season.

The Warriors are back in action at home on Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, to host Newberry in a nonconference matchup.
