PEMBROKE, N.C. – Southern Wesleyan men's basketball found themselves in the midst of a close game for the second time this week; however this time the Warriors came up short, losing 68-67 to Georgia Southwestern in the McDonald's Classic at UNC Pembroke.
Southern Wesleyan (1-3) came back from down 64-58 in the final 3:39 to take the lead at 65-64 on a pair of Cameron Solomon free throws, completing a 7-0 run. During that span Solomon made all four free throw attempts and Kenny Holmes nailed a three that pulled the Warriors to within one.
After that point the Hurricanes (2-1) pulled down two straight offensive rebounds that finally turned into two free throws that Josh Birchfield connected on. GSW had only six offensive rebounds all night but pulled down two in the most opportune time. After Holmes missed a three-point attempt the Hurricanes made two more free throws to push the lead out to 68-65. Holmes missed another three in the final seconds that Mike Lieberman tipped in to end the game.
The Warriors came back from down 14 with 1:47 left in the first half to take a 40-38 lead just four minutes into the second half, outscoring the Hurricanes 20-4 over that six minute span. Lieberman led the Warriors with eight points during the run, capped by Holmes' layup to put SWU up. Neither team grabbed the upper hand with the Hurricanes taking brief five and six-point leads before the Warriors rallied late.
SWU struggled from the floor in the game but made up for it with 17 offensive rebounds, leading to 14 second chance points. The Warriors shot just 37.7 percent from the floor while GSW connected on 51.1 percent of their attempts. The Warriors took 22 more field goals than the Hurricanes. Opponents continued to shoot the three well against the Warriors as the Hurricanes made 7-of-12 from beyond the arc despite making only 13-of-24 from the free throw line. The Warriors made 12-of-14 from the line but just 3-of-15 from long range.
Solomon led three Warriors in double figures with 20 points, his third 20-point performance of the year. Lieberman added 12 points and 12 rebounds, his first double-double of the season. Holmes chipped in with 11 points and seven assists.
The Warriors are back in action on Saturday at 5 p.m. against UNC Pembroke in the finale of the McDonald's Classic.
