CENTRAL, S.C. – Southern Wesleyan won their third straight on Friday night, this time taking down North Greenville 3-0 (25-20, 25-14, 25-12) in a battle of Conference Carolinas foes separated by just 40 miles. The Warriors have won three straight after suffering their lone conference loss two weeks ago.
SWU (18-6, 9-1 CC) ran away from the Crusaders (15-9, 2-8 CC) in the second and third sets after NGU made the opening set close with a late rally. North Greenville trailed 18-12 but battled back to within two at 20-18 before the Warriors closed the set by taking four of the last five points, capped off by a Jacinta Hoffpauir kill.
The Warriors hit .340 for the match while NGU was below .100 at .092. SWU hit .464 in the third set and .395 in the first as they committed just 12 errors on 97 attacks on the night. Sarah Hughey and Cherilyn Ramsey each recorded 11 kills as Ramsey posted a .526 attack percentage with just one error on 19 attempts. Ramsey also led the team with 16 digs, good enough for her team-leading 12th double-double of the season.
Courtney O'Brien chipped in with 12 digs and also added four service aces, all in the second set as SWU raced out to a 7-0 lead. O'Brien recorded her four aces within a five serve span in the opening moments. The Warriors raced out to a 19-10 lead and after three straight from the Crusaders, SWU closed the door by taking five straight and six of the final seven.
The third set was a similar story as SWU led 3-0 early and built a 13-6 lead on the heels of a five point run. The Crusaders climbed back to within four at 14-10 but then the Warriors ran away with the set, taking 11 of the final 13 points, highlighted by a service ace from Tori Wanner on the final serve.
Megan Widener dished out 33 assists for the Warriors and added four kills and five digs. Hughey added four total blocks to lead the team.
The Warriors get a rare Saturday off from action before travelling to Limestone on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. tilt.
