Warriors sweep Converse for second straight victory

Box Score

CENTRAL, S.C. – Two tight sets turned into a three-set sweep for Southern Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon as the Warriors defeated Converse College in a matchup of Conference Carolinas foes.

The Warriors held on to take the first set 27-25 as Converse came back from trailing 18-13.  SWU held on again in the second after losing a 17-11 lead to win 29-27 before making easy work of the Valkyries 25-13 in the third.

With the win the Warriors improved to 12-2 in three-set matches and have now won six of their last seven overall.

Sarah Hughey led all players with 18 kills and hit a robust .469 for the match.  SWU clubbed .317, the fifth time they've hit over .300 in a match this year and the first time since Sept. 26 against Campbellsville. Hughey added 10 digs and three total blocks.  The redshirt-sophomore now has nine double-doubles on the season.

Cherilyn Ramsey recorded her team-high 11th double-double of the season with 10 kills and 10 digs.  The senior hit .450 in the match.  Courtney O'Brien slid over to the primary setter position in the match as Megan Widener sat while dealing with an injury. O'Brien racked up 44 assists and a team-high 13 digs and four kills while also recording four service aces.

Alysia Cruell and Tori Wanner each added 11 digs to cap five players with double figure digs.  That defense helped limit Converse to just a .208 attack as the Valkyries had fewer errors (12-13) than the Warriors, but had 13 fewer kills.

Converse stayed close with their defense at the net, collecting one solo block and 16 block assists, led by Scottie Kay Auton's six total blocks.  Katie Butler led the team with 12 kills.

These two teams will meet again in Spartanburg on Nov. 5.

The Warriors close out their five-game home stand on Friday, as they welcome North Greenville to Tysinger for a 7 p.m. first serve.
