Warriors bounce back to take down Limestone in four

Box Score

CENTRAL, S.C. – Southern Wesleyan made sure they wouldn't suffer back-to-back losses, defeating Limestone 3-1 (25-14, 25-20, 23-25, 25-18) in a matchup of 6-1 Conference Carolinas teams.

The Warriors (16-6, 7-1 CC) jumped out to a dominating victory in the first set with a .378 hitting percentage which included not attack errors.  That was a theme all night long as the Warriors hit .270 for the match with just 14 errors while the Saints hit .164 with 24 errors.

Sarah Hughey led all players with 19 kills on 39 attempts, good for a .385 attack.  Cherilyn Ramsey added 13 kills and a .360 clip.  Alysia Cruell added nine kills as Jacinta Hoffpauir chipped in with eight and Megan Widener added five.  Widener also added 34 assists and 16 digs. Milica Stamenic also added 16 digs while Ramsey collected 13 and Hughey added 10.

In the first set the Warriors broke up a 15-13 advantage with nine straight points and finished the set by taking 10 of the last 11 points. The Warriors jumped out to a big 17-9 lead in the second set but the Saints marched back by winning six of seven to close the gap to 18-15.  Limestone closed to within two at 20-18 but three straight kills from the Warriors pushed the margin back to a comfortable five.

After the intermission, Limestone took a 7-3 lead in the third set, their first lead since 1-0 in the first set.  Limestone had their best offensive output in the third, hitting .268, as they took a 21-14 lead.  SWU rallied with a 4-0 run before a Limestone timeout killed the rally.  After the Saints took three of four points to get set point at 24-19, the Warriors fought back with three kills and an attack error from the Saints to close to within 24-23. After another timeout from Limestone, an attack error from the Warriors gave the set to the Saints.

The Warriors never trailed in the fourth, as four straight in the middle of the match gave them control at 17-12 as SWU cruised to the four set victory.  SWU improves to 4-3 in four-set matches with the win.

The Warriors are back in action on Saturday, hosting Converse at 2 p.m. in a Conference Carolinas match.
