SWU Volleyball Wins Sixth Straight

CENTRAL, S.C. – Southern Wesleyan survived a second-set scare to sweep Bethel (Tenn.) in Southern States Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon.


The Warriors remain unbeaten at home on the year, improving to 4-0 and they also stay atop the SSAC standings at 3-0.  The Warriors at 15-6 overall.


It was a balanced offensive attack for the Warriors on this day as no player recorded more than eight kills, but three players reached that total.  Kesley Deerinwater led the defense with 21 of the team's 37 digs.  Courtney Williams and Cherilyn Ramsey had four total blocks a piece and Hayley Hoover added three blocks.

  
The Warriors turned a 7-6 lead in the first set to a 15-8 lead, going on to win 25-18.  The Warriors were up 24-15 before Bethel closed by winning three straight points before Megan Widener's set-ending kill.  Widener had three kills in the match and added 29 assists and six digs.


Bethel (1-11, 1-4 SSAC) used that momentum from the first set early in the second, taking a 9-8 lead early.  The Warriors responded with three straight points to take an 11-9 lead, a lead they'd never give up.  Jacinta Hoffpauir ended the set with one of her eight kills.  Williams and Hoover had eight kills as well.


The Warriors dominated the third set, jumping out to a 14-4 lead, including a stretch of five straight points.
