Box Score 2 MOBILE, Ala. – Southern Wesleyan volleyball dropped two matches on Friday, first to Asbury in four sets and then a five-setter with Southeastern (Fla.) on the first day of the SHC/Mobile Invitational.
Asbury Match – Lost 3-1 (24-26, 22-25, 25-22, 31-33)
The Warriors dropped an epic four-set match to Asbury after falling behind two sets to none. The Warriors led throughout most of the first set before Asbury stormed back to take it 26-24. The Eagles carried the momentum into the second and won 25-22. SWU turned the tables in the third, winning 25-22, to force a fourth. In the fourth, neither team could pull away until Asbury's Catherine Wotler ended the match 33-31 in favor of Asbury.
Senior Kelsey Deerinwater recorded a career-high 50 digs in the match, besting her previous mark of 37 set in a five-set match against Belhaven in 2011. There was only three occurrences where a player recorded 50 or more digs in a match in the NAIA in 2012. She added three service aces. Megan Widener also reached the 50 mark in the match with 50 assists and also added 12 digs to record her first double-double of the season.
Cherilyn Ramsey led all players with 18 kills in the match, just one off of tying her career high. Courtney Williams (13) and Jacinta Hoffpauir (11) also reached the double-digit kill mark. Williams also had a double-double with 11 digs.
The Warriors hit .130 for the match, topping out at .188 in the second. Asbury hit .198 in their first match of the season and also had 13 total blocks.
Southeastern Match – Lost 3-2 (20-25, 25-22, 23-25, 25-16, 14-16)
Cherilyn Ramesy followed up her 18-kill performance with another 18 kills against Southeastern but it wasn't enough as the Warriors fell in five sets. Ramsey also had four blocks in the match. Megan Widener recorded her second straight double-double with 45 assists and 12 digs to finish the day with 95 assists and 24 digs. Kelsey Deerinwater added 24 digs and five service aces.
SWU will take on Xavier (La.) on Saturday at 1 p.m. followed by a 5 p.m. tilt with Southern-New Orleans. Live stats will be available for both matches here.
