How It Happened
The Lions of Emmanuel College started out the match with a 12-3 lead before the Warriors could get much going on offense. Kills from Sarah Stone and Olivia Johnson would cut the Lions lead to 12-7. Southern Wesleyan kept within four throughout a chunk of the first set as Johnson and Amber Bass produced kills. The Warriors showed promise of a comeback, but the Lions would take set one 25-17.
Emmanuel struck first again in the second set, but a kill from Danairi Malave would answer to even the score. The Lions made an impressive 9-0 run to take a 16-4 lead over the Warriors. Amber Bass was able to kill the run with a successful attack through the outside. Johnson produced three more kills late in the match, but the Lions would win set two 25-9.
The Warriors took a quick 5-0 lead in the third set with a service ace from Katlyn Von Ins and kills from Johnson. A competition for the momentum of the set would be in high force as both teams competed point for point. The Warriors maintained their lead at 10-7 before a small run from the Lions would tie it up at 10-10. Southern Wesleyan answered with kills from Johnson and Malave to reclaim a 15-13 lead. The Lions chased the majority of this set before taking a 22-21 lead late in the match. A late kill from Bass threatened, but the Lions would escape with a 25-22 win.
