Southern Wesleyan Starts Conference Play with a Win

Central, S.C. – Southern Wesleyan defeats Lees-McRae in their first Conference Carolinas match-up of the season in a 3-1 final.

The Warriors posted 53 kills in the victory, with senior Paige O'Connor leading the way with 20.  O'Connor was followed by Olivia Johnson with 13 kills.  Junior Annika Jones posted 46 assists during the match.  The Warriors had six total service aces, with O'Connor delivering three of them.  Kendall Vallancourt, Annika Jones and Shelby Sheets each had an ace to their name as well.  Junior Katie Anderson led the Warriors with 28 digs.  Anderson was followed by Shelby Sheets with 13 and Paige O'Connor with 10.  Kendall Vallancourt had four of the Warriors six blocks.

How It Happened

Set One

The Bobcats struck first taking a 3-0 lead on kills by Hannah Steckler, but the Warriors came back on errors and a service ace by Kendall Vallancourt.  Kills by Olivia Johnson, Paige O'Connor and Annika Jones drove the Warriors to an 8-5 point lead.  With Lees-McRae fighting back, Olivia Johnson and Katlyn Von Ins delivered kills to allow the Warriors to take their lead to 15-9.  Kills by Courtney Price, Katie Anderson and Paige O'Connor secured the Warriors with a 25-16 first set victory.

Set Two

Southern Wesleyan started strong in the third set, charging ahead to take a 4-0 lead before the Bobcats were able to put a point on the board.  Kills by Olivia Johnson, Davis Hendricks and Annika Jones gave the Warriors an 8-4 lead, however the Bobcats shortened the lead to 8-5 on a kill by Courtney Weathersbee.  Despite kills by several Bobcats, Southern Wesleyan rallied to an 18-9 point advantage over Lees-McRae.  With the Warriors leading by eight points, Paige O'Connor delivered a kill to give the Warriors a ten point lead and make the score 22-12.  The Warriors took the second set 25-14.

Set Three

The Warriors jumped ahead early to take a 5-3 point lead, but the Bobcats fought back to come to 11-8 behind.  Kills by Davis Hendricks allowed Southern Wesleyan to take a 14-9 point lead.  However, Lees-McRae strong defense and several errors by Warriors players resulted in the Bobcats tying the third set 18-18.  The Bobcats fought to take the lead and win the third set 25-21.

Set Four

Olivia Johnson started the fourth set strong, deliver two kills to give Southern Wesleyan a 3-0 lead.  Lees-McRae fought back to tie the set, but kills by Paige O'Connor and Kendall Vallancourt gave the Warriors a 10-8 point lead.  Southern Wesleyan gained control of the final set with kills by Olivia Johnson, Davis Hendricks and Paige O'Connor to take a 19-13 advantage over Lees-McRae.  A kill by Kendall Vallancourt secured the first Conference Carolinas victory for the Warriors as they won the final set 25-19.


What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will remain at home to take on the King Tornado on September 16 at 2 p.m.  They will then travel to take on the Francis Marion Patriots in non-conference action on September 19.  The Warriors will return to Conference play on September 22 as they take on the Mount Olive Trojans at 7 p.m.
